I switched to the Cosworth unit at about 5,000 miles and noticed a different induction sound and slightly improved throttle response. I have no idea how much of it is down to the placebo effect, but it’s a well-made product and the engine seemed to rev more freely. Take it for what it’s worth, but at $50 it seemed like money well spent to me.

I have an aFe Dry filter. I notice no noticeable difference in nose or whp. It was cheaper than the other ones when I bought it in 2013, and all I need to do is smack it against the curb for the dust to come out.

tl;dr

Stick with an OEM-style filter unless you're willing to clean it every month.

Has anyone bought the reusable / washable cotton air filters on ebay? No oiling, just use water to clean. They are now $14 shipped, and different colors, red, green, silver, black....

From what I've seen none filter like OEM, from my experience in multiple platforms, if you still are able to run the OEM box run a OEM filter, if due to modifications you cannot use the stock box, or mod it to make it work, then look at aftermarket.

Hell, I've retro fitted OEM air boxes from different manufacturers IOT retain a quality filter when modifications to the intake tract required it.

In all my years I've never seen a OEM filter as a big enough restriction to warrant aftermarket.

Every manufacturer will say other wise.

When I've needed an aftermarket filter I only use dry though, oiling is a pain, cleaning every couple of weeks is a pain and I've seen issues down stream of the filter from excess oil.

So TRD / K&N drop in, I'm fine with that ( talk of the filter oil hitting the MAF sensor, got me thinking if their were any other good alternatives). That's pretty much all I was asking, just wanted to see if anyone had bought one of these to see how they were, their perspective of their quality

There are two aspects to filters: flow and filtration. Yes, it is possible to get better flow along with decent/same levels filtration but most aftermarket filters I've seen emphasise flow (more hp) over filtration. (Because compromise.) The testing procedure for filtering is quite extensive and most people don't seem to consider filtering, just the supposed hp gains. Is the difference in filtering significant? I have no idea. Maybe it would take 200,000 kms to find out. It is just something else to consider.

Myself? I change my oem air filter about every 10,000 kms regardless. *shrug*

I originally swapped the OEM filter for a HKS and then when I had the tune done to balance the changes (header, OP and front pipe) I went for the Takeda CAI.

The sound tube was left plumbed in but blocked at the CAI end. As for impressions, the car revs more cleanly/freely, it's smooth through the rev range and over 4k(ish) I can hear the intake but it's not as intrusive as the OEM with the sound thingy.

I'm very happy with the setup, the CAI looks great, not blingy but subtle.. almost looks OEM.

Captain Snooze: btw, that's the reason, why i like TRD intake design, even if it didn't bring much performance gains vs other aftermarket intakes/filters. Exactly because they seemed to have used one of ways to increase flow but without compromising filtration (larger filtration area of larger filter = less pressure drop).

Do our NA cars even build intake pressure though?

OK, if i'll change wording to "less resistance to airflow", will it be better?
