The light comes on when you have 2.4 gallons of usable fuel left, giving you 60 to 70 miles depending on your fuel economy. You can't access the last half gallon or so of your tank because it's below the pickup. That's to prevent exactly what OP was afraid of, sucking crap up into the fuel system. That last half gallon gives the tank a place to collect water and debris.

If you run the Torque app, you can set up a fuel gauge that will tell you how much usable fuel you have left. It's very helpful in determining when your situation is urgent.

Take a large clear container.
Half fill it with gas.
Add a cup of water
Throw in a handful of light land.
Put it inside car and drive a block.
Tell me how much of the water and sand stayed under half an inch on the bottom.
The tank of a moving vehicle does not collect anything.

Haha I thought this would never happen to me but its true, I ran out of gas while driving earlier today.
I was super busy today and was unable to go to the gas station and wanted to wait till tomorrow, plus I didn't know how much I could drive past the gas warning light. It happened so fast, all of a sudden the RPM wouldnt go past 5k while giving throttle and BAM the car turned off!! Luckily I was able to coast and turn into a neighborhood even though it was a large street....imagine not finding any turns!

...I can now say I learned my lesson, and will be filling up every half a tank.

I wanted to know If I damaged my car or parts in any way because of the car turning off due to running out of gas?

Have any of you guys run out of gas while driving?...Any stories?
I'm sorry to say but this is poor planning on behalf of the Captain.

Then why not put the pickup at the bottom of the tank so you can use the entire volume?

Does it matter if you run out of gas with 1/2 an inch or 1/16th an inch? At some point it just isn't worth going further. They really don't need to design a system that sucks out every last ounce of gas. The gap doesn't mean it is designed to lat things "collect" either.

Now that I know it irritates you, I'm going to keep telling everyone that's why it's there.

LOL Read my response three times and don't see how it sounded irritated. If irritated I just wouldn't reply at all.

Oh, that's even better. From now on I'm going to tell everyone that the auto makers leave a 1/2 gallon of unusable fuel in the bottom of the tank to avoid picking up water or debris, because they know it irritates Tcoat for them to do it that way.

I have all ready wrote letters to all of them. The only one that responded was Lada and they told me to get lost. In Russian. They also tried to sell me a fake passport, some Viagra knockoff and offered t write my term paper for me.
