Ran out of gas...while driving!

What's up guys!

Haha I thought this would never happen to me but its true, I ran out of gas while driving earlier today.
I was super busy today and was unable to go to the gas station and wanted to wait till tomorrow, plus I didn't know how much I could drive past the gas warning light. It happened so fast, all of a sudden the RPM wouldnt go past 5k while giving throttle and BAM the car turned off!! Luckily I was able to coast and turn into a neighborhood even though it was a large street:bow:....imagine not finding any turns!:confused0068:

...I can now say I learned my lesson, and will be filling up every half a tank.

I wanted to know If I damaged my car or parts in any way because of the car turning off due to running out of gas?

Have any of you guys run out of gas while driving?...Any stories?

You will get all sorts of horror theory's about over heated pumps and sucking up crap. One time will not hurt the pump since it doesn't keep running once the car is off and there is no magic separation in the tank that lets materials sit in the bottom and only get sucked up when you run out.
You will be 100% fine. Just don't keep doing it.

Never heard of anyone running out of gas while parked......sorry.
It has happened to me twice. Both times because of faulty gauges. Last time was a borrowed Mercedes coupé. I remember looking at the gauge and thinking "hang on, still half a tank? That's odd..." and the it just stalled. City street, rush hour, managed to pull over onto the sidewalk in neutral. Walked to the nearest gas station, borrowed a jerry can, walked back. No big deal. :)

I used to have an old Ford conversion camper van and was on I40 headed from some Dead shows in southern California back to school in Flagstaff with 12 people in the van. There's a stretch that's about 120 miles between towns, might be more the memory is a bit fuzzy because this was 30 years ago, and it's mostly uphill. Things started getting dicey about ten miles before town and it started sputtering on a climb so I was doing the Nascar slosh trying to keep the pressure up. As I pulled off on the exit ramp it shut off and I put it in neutral and coasted the last half mile to the gas station but when it hit the drainage ditch at the edge of the driveway it stopped. Thankfully that was less than 50 feet to the pumps so a bunch of fkd up, half asleep college kids got out and pushed it the last few feet.

So there's my ran out of gas story :)

:slap: ......... that's for your poor judgement ......... :D

Of course I have a story ........

It was a hot night, in the late 60s, when I flew into LAX form NYC and rented a car.

I left the airport, jumped on I-105, heading for Riverside.

Ya know how rental cars usually have a full tank of gas ......:(

Well, guess what, that POS started sputtering, just as I was passing through the area of LA between Watts and Compton.

Fortunately an exit was right there...... so, I took it. Not too far from the end of the exit ramp, the car quit running.

There I was, dressed in a suit, late at night, somewhere on the border of Watts and Compton. Nope, no cell phone, they hadn't been invented yet.

As I eased out of the car, I was approached, by these three big, bad looking dudes. I put on my meanest looking Clint Eastwood face ..... but, it didn't seem to phase them.

The surrounded me and the "group" leader said "do you realize how dangerous it is for a white guy to be alone in this neighborhood at night??"

He went on to say that what I needed was some "protection" to be escorted up to the nearest gas station. So, although I was an ex Army trained killer ..... I took them up on their offer.

We walked up to this small, corner station, with this bad looking dude, with two mean looking dogs, sitting in a caged office and one of my escorts asked him to borrow a gas can and funnel. He agreed.

We proceeded back to the car and put in a couple gallons of gas.

I thought that now that the car had gas, they would mug me, steal my money and the car .......

Quite the contrary, they offered to return the gas can and funnel and suggested that I move on up the ramp onto the freeway and go at least two exits before I pulled off for more gas.

I thanked them, gave them a $20 for their help and quickly motored out of that area ........ :eyebulge:

THE END

I always reset my trip odometer with a fill up. It serves a couple of purposes. One, (unless I've been on a track or something), I know I'm safe to 300 miles - though I usually fill up a little before that point, and two - dramatically decreasing gas mileage is a good indicator of other potential problems if you see it start to happen repeatedly.

But yeah, you'll be fine.

Celica00 11-04-2017 08:22 PM

About how many miles did you travel between going empty and the warning light turning on?

It's either Totaled OR it will Buff Out.

Actually you've DOUCHED your fuel tank. Most likely not a bad thing to do once in a while. Maybe try it again in 100,000 miles.

Just be happy you did not buy one of those fucking electric cars and got stuck in a fancy assed neighborhood where all the utilities are underground...with no way to hook up to a pole.

Oh, my, .......:sigh:

How did we ever manage before the lights, gongs and buzzers were there to bring out attention to the fuel level .......... :iono:
