Yeah, figured it out. Broke the last tab on the drivers side. I'm used to being rather forceful and gentle, but ... this required a bit more force than many other cars I've worked on. Not a bad thing, keeps the rattles to a minimum.

To remove the panel below the kneepad with minimal distortion and chance of damage:
There are three "locators" along the top of that panel on the back, plus a clip at the end furthest from the engine end. The clip is about half-way up. ALSO, at the top of the panel at the engine end, about 20mm back towards the rear of the car, there is a finger hole. You can slip fingers up behind the panel then starting from the engine end, pull towards the door to release the first "locator". Then, stick a finger in the finger hole and pull towards the door to release the next locator, then the next one. Then, while pressing the console close to where the clip is, fingers under the panel close to the clip, pull the panel straight towards the door.
