Talking about downshifting to 2nd by mistake, ironically here's a video showing a 2017 doing just that. It's part of an understeer/oversteer explanation video.

It's basically lift oversteer x10. That's all.

Over rev of the engine does damage (usually) due to valve springs or similar that can't handle the excessive speed above the designed parameters. This leads to one or more of weakened valve springs, broken springs, immediate valve float, weakened valve rockers. A number of these can lead to fatigue that fails over time or immediate failure causing interference with the piston that causes a valve to exit or something equally bad.
There is no issue shifting like that so long as you don't push the components past what they are able to handle, that video that @nikitopo posted probably has updated springs etc so can handle the extra abuse thrown at it.

The engine is the Japanese-market STI spec.c’s, a 2.0-liter turbocharged boxer-four that’s been given the larger turbo from the R205. No other changes. It depends also how this car was driven. I would be worried more to keep the RPMs close to the redline for a long time, than to have an occasional over-revving. |

Those are two separate cars. Both turbo'd. Top 2 pics were mine. All 3 pics off FB. Mine was 6500rpm extended time and jumping on it in 2nd. Clanking then pop. I think the last one was also high rpm as well. Mine is early 2013 build.

Thousands of guys track these cars with stock engine and rev them from 5000- redline consistently for entire tract or autocross session s. And their are very few that blow up.

There are some of us who've been revving up to 8K RPM on stock internals for the last 60K miles (on E85) without blowing their engines either.

Close to the redline for a long time is something like holding 6500rpm or higher for extended time. We can see such issues here in autobahn where someone might keep top speed constantly in 5th gear instead of 6th gear for better acceleration. If you just rev the engine and change immediately to higher gear is fine. |
