Twins future question
That's seriously sort of disheartening. Combine that with the news this morning that Toyota wants to aggressively cut cost on conventional cars in favor of EVs and hybrids, that really kind of scares me for the fate of the twins... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I don't know. I'm reading a lot of talk about sportier cars being a good profit center for carmakers. The thing is, there's little margin in people-movers,and Korea/China/India can do that type of vehicle cheaper than Toyota/Honda/Ford and make a profit. I think there's still a decent future for specific-use cars (e.g. performance) that people will pay a premium for. The 86 falls into that category.

Anyway, according to this article - that again, spoke to the Chief Engineer in person - the 86 doesn't need heavy bracing to make a convertible. That was the topic I replied to, that was my point. "Evidence" is a loaded term that I did not use. As far as the "Mark II," you'll have to explain why that bothered you enough to bold and point it out, because I don't see a problem with it. Would you consider any version of this car since its inception to be different enough to be called "Mark II?" |

Not only did I read the article I quoted it: "The updates add just 17.6 pounds to the new model, Tada says. Note the period at the end of this. The article reads as if they are referring to the convertible. They are not. "Toyota and Subaru engineered this chassis to accommodate a convertible version without the need for heavy bracing, but that won’t happen with this generation model." This is not even attributed to being a quote but is simply the writer's statement. There are about 3 whole lines of "quotes" throughout the whole thing. Tada would like a convertible from the get-go for a second-generation model, but he hinted that Toyota has yet to sign off on an 86 Mark II. Once again no quote just a writer saying he "would like" one. The Mark II is bolded because even if Tada did say it (which I doubt since they use the word "hint") he isn't saying the convertible isn't confirmed but the whole damned next gen. You have fallen for the click bait trap that has swallowed so many before you.

The people on this forum, probably just this thread, are a tiny minority of owners who want this car to get better by being lesser suited to the masses of drones. I cant think of one mainstream car that got better the way a small bunch of nuts wanted it to. The 86 is a better car than the FR-S, but not anywhere near the bare bones nuttiness. If it survives, it will do so by growing up and leaving the kids behind.

Like car's progression is strongly recorded in automotive history and the cars either evolve to meet the masses or die trying to please the "enthusiasts".

Those of you that can afford to do so would be better off buying a new "first-gen" FR-S or BRZ and sticking it in a barn somewhere. Whatever happens to it, it will never be as good (to the nuts) as the first generation.
The one thing I miss going from an FR-S to an 86 is the crudeness and the sense of always being on the edge of a crash when pushed. The 86 is "better" in every way, but it got there by sanding the edges off. Toyota will not be adding edges. |
