So how much damage did i do to my synchros since this happened?
1. Dont try to go into first gear at 10-15MPH, thats bad and the transmission is purposely locking you out of first.
2. You don't need to downshift from 2nd to 1st if you're just coasting to a stop.
3. If you're really concerned about bogging the engine while coming to a stop (like a red light), just shift to neutral.
4. You dont haaave to be at a complete standstill to drop to 1st gear for situations like going up a hill, but try to only do it when <5MPH. Above 5MPH 2nd gear should still be fine going up a hill anyway.

No one mentioned it so I'll take one for the team. Prep your flamethrowers.

Double-clutch into first on a roll. Get good at it and you won't ever worry about deciding between stopping and lugging.

...which truly sucks.

OR ..... put it in reverse, start backwards, quickly slam it into 2nd, than yank it into first while double clutching, floor the gas then pop the clutch ...... that should break that puppy in .......

(no - don't do that)

Some metal is removed from gears over time; you just removed alittle more than normal.

I've been practicing going into first at 30 mph recently

That's close to the lid, isn't it? I haven't been quite as ballsy. I'm perfecting around 25. It's pure joy to really nail it and come through smoothly without thinking.

The art of rev matching is an ancient midichlorian trait.
You've got it or you get a grind your gears experience that Peter would be proud of.
