1st gear shake and grind?

Hey guys, just finished the breakin period for my 2017 BRZ and sometimes when I'm going 5mph and try and put it into 1st, I hear a whining sound which I understand are the synchros spinning up but sometimes when it refuses to go into 1st and I manage to put it in, I hear a grinding sound and the shifter shakes violently , keep in mind this is with the clutch pushed all the way to the floor. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm on mobile so ignore any grammar mistakes

I'm interested to hear people's take on it. I notice my car does too, but it goes away once the car is good and warmed up.

Since you both are from up north I'm assuming it's from the tranny and fluid not warmed up yet.

That's definitely a possibility. But what I found is strange just like the op, on my way to lunch while coasting to a stop from about 10-15mph it was like there was a gate blocking my shifter from getting into first until I was going like
3-4
Mph.

Why are you shifting into 1st before you stop? Seriously just want to know. There was a time when cars didn't have synchronizers in 1st gear and it was impossible to do.

That sounds about right.

Or at all!

And ...

We only had 3 gears so you would really have liked to be able to go into first. If you did try to force it the resulting scream sounded like cats were mating under your car.

Don't shift to 1st gear unless your completely stopped. You can use 2nd gear that low no problem. If you insist you must, then blip the throttle and it will slide right in.

StraightOuttaCanadaEh 05-03-2017 06:00 PM

Ditto, do not shift into first unless you're at below walking pace

Was waiting to see who else would bring it up but I guess nobody is.

Both your cars are new and although "broken in" by the requirements they still have a way to go before they are fully done. Give your tranny a few more thousand miles and it will loosen up more. Many here have reported stiffness and grinding disappearing after they drove the car enough.

I feel like this is true most of the time, but I find that going 3-5mph on a slope in 2nd will make the car bog. I don't normally shift into first while the car is moving, but there are circumstances where it's the smoothest way to drive in congested areas.

I think it's possibly something like this. It's happened to me before as well (@Tcoat has heard my asks about this :P).

As far as I can tell it's only happened going into first, though I've had it happen from stops, not downshifting 2nd to 1st. I think there's been once or twice when shifting up that it's sort of happened in 2nd or 3rd. Like it doesn't go all the way into them, or at least not very easily. But not nearly as often (but the issue itself is even less frequent).

Usually it just takes pulling it back into neutral with clutch fully engaged and then putting the stick back through the 1st gate and all the way in and it's fine (as in, it won't happen twice in a row of it happening).

As said here already, I think it's a matter of letting things warm up more as well as getting more miles on the car past the break-in period.

2nd gear that slow seems to be lugging the engine..

So how much damage did i do to my synchros since this happened?

Your transmission will be OK. You really have to slam on it to break it. As mentioned, just don't try to put it into first unless you are stopped. It just takes a few thousand miles to smooth out (as much as it's ever gonna).
