Air in the hydraulic clutch circuit can cause trouble disengaging the clutch.
I think you should bring it to the dealer, before aggravating things. It should be covered under warranty. Don't say to them you were driving spiritedly... |

Or if there happens to be some manufacturing defect that worked together with that missshift to get that result

OP, even after you said that you had only 2Kmi on the clock I didn't mention warranty because I figured you, like me, were ready to take responsibility for your actions. The damage I did to mine was from straight up abuse. I wasn't clear about that when I first replied. My bad.
Now, I've missed the 2-3 shift a couple times and EVERYONE has trouble with the 1-2 when it's cold out. There's a helpful technique that we can discuss separately. These transmissions are notchy and clunky when they're brand new. The syncros take a good 8-10 Kmiles to break in. Are you absolutely sure you feel a difference in upshifting to third after this incident?

I don't think I'm going to get it warrantied or even mention it to the dealer. I want to maintain a good relationship with the dealer (so not have them take a hit because of my warranty). I also have a feeling if I did show it to them, they'd say it's normal and to deal with it. I will wait to get it fixed until it becomes worse or until a grinding noise happens on the upshifts. For now, it's just a crunchy feeling with no noise on that upshift. Still running stock transmission fluid since I don't know how to change it and also don't have any sort of way to lift my car. |

As long as your gear stick goes in gear then your syncros are working. There might be a slight grind now and then from a chipped tooth though.
I'd change your transmission fluid. |

Yeah, it still goes into 3rd easily, so sounds like a chipped tooth. Okay, I'll change the fluid shortly. Any suggestions on what replacement fluid I should use?
I do wonder what the loud popping noise on the mis-shift was though. It sounded like a balloon popping under my car, lol. |

Well, that's just a damn shame. At least you have plenty of time to study it and decide.

It is refreshing to read a thread where the OP flat out says "I done screwed up" instead of trying to find 1,000 ways to blame somebody else.

A loud pop that corresponds with a change in performance does indicate some sort of failure. Changing fluid won't fix that. OP, take it to the dealer and feel out the situation.

Ever since I purchased the car used (at 20,000 miles) I've had a tiny little crunch going from 2nd to 3rd. Never happens in any other situation -- 4th or 5th to 3rd is fine. So i am probably in the same boat as you. I've put 20,000 miles on the car with the tiny crunch and have no problems.
Being that its a new car, you might take it to the dealer anyway, but otherwise I wouldn't worry about it until the crunch becomes more of a problem. |

Take the vehicle to the dealer. Say you're having issues getting it into 2nd and 3rd, sometimes it is harder when cold.
Easy. Don't say anything else.... just say the vehicle doesn't shift smoothly. Good lord. |

Subaru claims the 2017 trans has increased durability. Depending on plans for the car, I'd be hesitant the fit one from the older models.
