As it happens, I just put my brand new aluminum wheels on the car last Saturday. Each lug was torqued with a Snap-On torque wrench, which I trust (because it was so expensive ). I left the wrench set to 89 Ft-lb. After driving about 70 miles I checked each lug. Out of 20 lugs, only 14 were still at spec. Six lugs needed a noticeable (but unmeasured) bit of re-torquing.

That's bad for the wrench. Breakaway torque wrenches need to be stored unloaded.

But you're an EE so you get a pass.

Yeah, if this is the case, that torque wrench definitely needs a calibration check at least.

Ok, just for fun I went out to the garage.

I took out my wheel torque wrench that is left at 92 ft-lbs (pretty much all the time).
I also took out my "good" torque wrench that is stored unloaded.

I turned DOWN the 92 ft-lbs to 70 ft-lbs.
I set my unloaded "good" TR to 70 ft-lbs

I then conencted them together and "calibrated".
Guess what?
They BOTH click at precisely the same setting even after going up & down a few pounds.

So you guys might be right!
My "loaded" torque wrench could be off maybe more than 0.1 ft-lbs!!!
Oh No! My wheels are going to fall off!

BTW - I am torque wrench certified by Lockheed Martin & NASA for use on flight hardware, so I have almost as much knowledge about the subject as your average internet desk-jockey expert.

I know that storing a TR loaded will cause an error over time, but the magnitude of the error is insignificant for a wheel lug bolt.
