That said, that's absurdly inexpensive compared to anything down here. I did VIR a couple of weeks ago at a practical steal for $365 for two days (IIRC)

I completely understand, I pretty much don't race in iRacing over the summer either. Autocross and track days eat up my desire for that stuff.

The big thing with iRacing is the racing, if you're getting that sort of competitive buzz at an HPDE you're doing something wrong. Autocross gets the buzz going a bit, but I can't wait to do some actual W2W racing and iRacing is a nice "fix" for that during the off season.

Karting is definitely an option, but at least where I am it's crap-tastic electric karts within ~15 minutes or drive an hour or more to pay $60-100 for ~30 minutes of track time (with at least half of it wasted behind slow people that shouldn't be there) when I could have had ~4 hours of track time in iRacing with some of the fastest drivers in the world at my virtual doorstep. Not much value for money in my local karting, IMO. I know there are kart leagues and what not... but I travel for work a lot and can't commit to anything like that I really wish I could, haha

Well, I guess im very fortunate then. Track days,entry fee $200-300, fuel $80, 2 hot bogs a poutine and 2 gatorades = $15, so its betwen $300 and $400 all in, and CAD at that so 220 to 300 USD. I have 6 tracks within 3 hours of travel, so no hotel for me most of the time.

For the competitive side, I actually do 2 types of events only, 1 is a time trial, and its very very competitive. Second one is a lapping day where we do something called "gentleman racing". Advanced group gets to do actual racing, no prices tho and no rules so cars are usually so different that the race lasts 2 to 3 laps, and then its more like lapping again. Im lucky here that most of the people who time trial in my class also go there, so we get a whole 20mins of tight racing on every single one of those (2 per event).

Karting, I live 20 minutes away from the place with the fastests indoor karts in all of Canada, and I can do around 1hr of karting for around 70CAD.

I guess all in all im very lucky to live here, and for me, in my situation, iracing just doesnt make much sense when I could spend time and money on doing the real thing.

I think what @DocWalt is getting at, is that he's looking at the *total* cost of a track day, inclusive of consumables and wear and tear, rather than just entry fees and fuel.

I'm still on both the pad AND tired I was on at that track day.
If you'd like me to break down the cost of how much life I took out of those items during that day, it's not going to happen.

Well that's how you measure the *actual* cost of a track day. A quick visual estimation of the % of both used is all that's needed. You take that % and multiply the cost of the tires/brakes + i nstallation ( 0 if you do it yourself), to get your true cost.

Sometimes, it's better to just not know the real cost.

Japan does things a bit differently. Depending on the track, you usually pay a yearly fee, ranging from $200-400. Then there is open track days scattered throughout the month and you pay $30-60 for a 30-40 minute session. How would you guys say this compares to the states when you break it down to time/cost?

That sounds awesome....in the states we pay one price ranging from $200-$500 for 1 day with 4-5, 20-30 minute sessions.

Here in Canada, my closest track has full day open lapping for 160 bucks.
