If you're lowered & have some camber dialed in its perfect aesthetically.

Also as long as you don't get some super sticky rubber you can still break traction with relative ease.

Most competitive autocrossers go with 17x9 wheels wrapped in 245/40/17 Bridgestone RE71R. it give optimal traction for short bursts, but as temperature build up, it loses some grip properties, so it may not be the best for track. As for daily/weekend spirited driving, Michelin PSS are the most popular.

the most popular light weight wheels is Enkei RPF1(not my favorite design), but there are slightly more expensive alternatives such as Wedssport TC105N.

Well, aesthetics is really secondary. I'd like to keep the car characteristics and not bog it down with a too big / heavy tyre. But I want a sticky tyre on the new rim. Track only.

I'll probably have to go with Enkei rpf1, it's Australia, and the alternatives are few and far between - and really expensive.

I'm in the 17x8 +35 club. I like this size because it fits in the wheel wells perfectly with a bit of camber and a 1 inch drop and the rim width is great because you can run all the way from a stretched 215/45 up to a meaty 245/40.

My track setup is 17x8 +35 with 245/40r17:




Using old BFG Rivals this year but next year I'm thinking of going to a better compound in a 225 sized tire instead.

Nice input I do have a question...what is your reasoning behind going to a 225 width tire from 245? Do you lose some feel with the wider tire?

235 will make steering heavy and take away the stock cars playful nature and turn it into a train.

My 17x9 245/40's disagree with handling like a train. I can still get loose and play. But that's just my anecdotal experience.

Do you feel bulgy with 245s? I know it comes down to the sidewall of the specific tire mfg as well. I was thinking of going up to 245 from 225 to pay my way up PAX

Another one for 17x8 +35 w/ 225/45 tires for track day. The narrower 225 will give you better turn-in and response than a 235 or 245, and will still be plenty of tire for the power levels you can reach while keeping the car NA.







If you're doing autocross though 17x9 w/ 245/40 is the sweet spot. Dependent on class of course.

Turn in and braking felt great to me but as you said, I think it depends on the relative stiffness of the sidewall. The old BFG Rival is known to have a very stiff sidewall so the 245 on an 8 inch wide rim felt great but something with a more flexible sidewall like the RS3 would probably feel better in 215 or 225 sized tire.
