What width for NA?
 

Gents,

I'm after some light-weight wheels & good tyres recommendations.

I plan staying NA for now with my car, it's an automatic btw. It's for fun, really, and a few track days are on the agenda. WD (weekend driver, hehe)

I can use the regular tyres for normal driving and buy a set of wheels for track only. But I don't want to overdo it (too big/too wide). Performance is the aim.

So if I stay NA, (maybe do a header & tune) running on good ole' Aussie 98, what's the optimal size to go for? 17x8 with 225's? 235's?

I'd stick to 215 personally, but if you track than i would go 225 max (personally)

235 will make steering heavy and take away the stock cars playful nature and turn it into a train.

17x8 with high performance summer 225s seem to be the sweet spot for NA autos

I agree on this as well. Second option is on a 235 tire.

Personally, I think 17x9 is perfectly suited to this car. I'm running 255/40 ZII all around and I love the feel for daily driving, have plenty of grip for track days, and with header+E85 the car has enough grunt to break traction whenever you like (with a little momentum).

That being said, the car does move around a bit with the road surface, and the ZII are loud as hell, but on a more reasonable street tire (MPSS perhaps?) I imagine it'll be fine.

As I mentioned, this will be the track wheel+tyre, on the road I'm fine with the default wheels, maybe a better tyre when this one gets too old.

Good to know the 255 is still a reasonable option - altho with header&E85 you must be around 190whp at least, right?

Yeah, I made 195whp at the 86Expo/PTuning Dyno Day last year. The car still retains its balance, even with the added grip. On track performance is genuinely impressive for the car, especially with some decent pads. Turn in is just awesome with the big tires up front.

That seems to be the range most track and autocross people like. The one thing I would check out before you decide is tire prices and availability. Track days can burn through tires, and an odd size might mean you are stuck with over expensive tires.

17x8 +35 wheel and a 225/45R17 tire should be more than enough.

Just make sure your tire is kind stretched like stock so you have better feel like around 95mm
