FA20 with GTX series turbo - what size oil restrictor?
I'm in the midst of swapping my PTE 4854 out for a new Garrett GTX2871r. Is a .035 restrictor the one to use with the FA20?
From Garrett's site: Oil pressure entering a ball-bearing turbocharger needs to be between 40 psi and 45 psi at the maximum engine operating speed. For many common passenger vehicle engines, this generally translates into a restrictor with a minimum of 0.040" diameter orifice upstream of the oil inlet on the turbocharger center section. Again, it is imperative that the restrictor be sized according to the oil pressure characteristics of the engine to which the turbo is attached. Always verify that the appropriate oil pressure is reaching the turbo. I'm thinking this is what I'm after: http://www.atpturbo.com/mm5/merchant...Category_Code= |

I used a .035 on my garretts without issues. Too much oil can leak past the seals and cause smoking.

I'm about to run a GTX2867R on my 86. Should I be running the same oil restrictor?
Anyone have any idea how much oil pressure (PSI) while idle, cruise and full load from these fa20? |

Idle oil pressure is very low. Some people have reported 8 PSI or lower. I see 16. 3000 RPM 60 PSI 6000 RPM 80 PSI 7500 RPM 70 PSI I run 10-30 with a 34-row oil cooler and a journal bearing turbo. Street temps stabilize at 181*F and rise under "spirited" driving. Never seen over 220 F. Pressure drops as temp rises but never below 70 at the high end. To the people on .035 restrictors... Garrett Specifies a minimum diameter of .040, .035 is too small. These engines do not make an over-abundance of oil pressure. .040 or even .045 would be better. Too little oil can cause premature wear. Remember, a GTX2867R at 14 PSI tops 100,000 RPM shaft speed before you hit 6000.
