You must be new to Subarus.

Go back to the '04 to '05 WRX STi.

Go ahead a couple years to the '08 to '09 WRX.

The '04 STI and '08 WRX were first model years and Subaru royally fucked the people who bought them. I'm holding out for the second model year.

even the '08 STi (first year of the hatchback) compared the the '11 STi has minor suspension tweaks to handle even better. Subaru's history of continously updating their performance vehicles + the fact that they have flat-out stated they will continue to develop and update this car, similar to the GTR= each new MY BRZ/FR-S will undoubtedly be a little better.

Question is, how much more will it cost? What if you just upgraded via aftermarket? How long will you have to wait?

It's a trade-off IMO...

Not true at all.
Typical wrx went for 27000 and sti went for 32000.
Adding brembo calipers and bbs wheels alone can even out cost.
And add 6 speed, better suspensions, alcantara interior, wing, bigger turbo, and etc the cost is way beyond 5k.
Now with that said, brz sti better have some sort of force induction, wider body, and few suspension or engine gadgets to be worth the wait.

2012 4 dr WRX MSRP = $25,595
2012 4 dr WRX STI MSRP = $34,095

2012 5 door MSRP = $25,595
2012 5 door STI MSRP = $36,095

2013 BRZ base MSRP = $25,495
20?? BRZ STI MSRP = $??,??? If I was a betting man I'd say it's going to be between $33k and $36k.

So what exactly was the big difference between the 04 and 05 sti?
I see that the horse power bump on the wrx from 08 to 09 was pretty significant... that would have aggravated me. If I was an early adopter of the 08 wrx I don't think I would ever buy Subaru again.

STi:
new Helical Front limited slip differential
new power steering oil cooler
new wider 8" wheel (replaces 7.5")
better wheel bearings/hubs (5x114 all around)
new rear wheel arch flares, body colored
new Yaw sensor (part of the lateral G sensor)
new climate control
new smoked headlight lens
new seat cushion side bolster material
new center console cupholders, replaces the one by the center vent
new sam/fm/CD changer w/ bass, mid, treble adjustments, 6 spkrs
new door armrest redesigned, now cloth, includes mirror controls
and probably some other changes.

Even the '02 to '03 WRX was improved (clutch, interior details).

Subaru is the Porsche of Japanese car makers - lots of special editions, lots of performance tweaks/changes through a cars life, similar 'stick to the original idea' attitude (boxer engine, AWD, etc.). (Toyota is the Mercedes Benz (focus on solid feel and comfort) and Honda is the BMW(focus on driving pleasure))

Get LTD now, Get STI later. Make sure they are two different colors so you can tell them apart.
