My nearest 91 octane or better is 40 miles away. Sometimes, mostly due to poor prior planning on my part, my gas cans are empty and I have to fill at my local station that has one pump dispensing 89 octane goat pee. Will you join me in a class action suit against Toyota and Subaru for them forcing me to walk 80 miles with a jerry can?

Dudes in Colorado up in the hills should get in on this too.

SERIOUS Some of you really do believe that a tank (or even some) under 91 octane gas will destroy your engine? /SERIOUS

Added: I should thank TCoat for telling me that there is zero sense of humor around here. I shall adjust. However, "every now and then" does seem to be a bit too much for some of you to comprehend.

Actually, most people here have a great sense of humor.

The problem with your post is that some noob comes here looking for some reliable information and you confuse them with your unique circumstances (no 91, too far away, better to screw out plugs to lesson pressure, etc.).

It's confusing to the new people.

Understood, thank you. I guess I never would have thought people would think I was not being serious (mostly).

Yep, @CatScan, I can somewhat identify with that situation.

I drove my NC Miata around in the backcountry of Colorado for several thousands of miles. The Miata not only likes high test, it really gets sluggish on the lower octane stuff, especially at the higher altitudes.

So, when you're low on gas and are coming into a small town with one gas station, with only two pumps, and the "high test" pump has dust and cobwebs all over it ...... one has a dilemma . Should you take a chance on some really old, half water, stuff out of the high test pump ……. or go with the lower octane, which has a better chance of being in that underground tank less longer ……. ??

In those instances, I would put about a half a tank of the lower octane stuff in the tank, just to get me back to civilization. The Miata would buck and snort …… but it would still run. At least it wasn’t leaded gas …….

Thanks. I will make one last attempt at an explanation. Your car, and mine, not being made in the hills of Pakistan, have the ability to operate on less than optimal fuel. The FR-S has a remarkably capable ECU, and you can watch in real-time (and feel) as it adapts to crapoline. Not that I endorse running on crapoline, but my point all this time has been that running crap "every now and then" will not kill your car if you are not an idiot.

My car runs on pure moonshine! It's like 160 proof or approx 115 octane.

I was not trying to say there is no sense of humor here I was trying to point out that your comments were confusing the hell outta me! The sense of humour for most (not all by any stretch) on here is actually top notch.
Personally I thought you had made it very clear that you were talking about using it in the rare occasion where you were really forced to and not saying it is ok for constant or prolonged use so I am a bit baffled as to how the debate has gone on this long.

Nobody should plan to use it all the time but if it is all there is in a pinch you are not going to blow your engine up. It will of course not give you full power but it will work. If anybody wants to be very sure there will never be a problem just carry a bottle of octane booster and add it if you get stuck and have to use 87.
