Ethanol or Non Ethanol
 

Do you use Premium and if so ethanol or non ethanol My son got his car yesterday and it had a full tank. I do not suppose the dealer filled it with premium non ethanol. I would think mileage and rubber hoses would appreciate Non ethanol.

yes, please do not listen to @CatScan.. you need 91. 93 is a bonus if you have it in your state. E85 needs to be tuned for it so I recommend to not fuel up with E85.

If a guy has to ask what type of gasoline to use, I don't know what to consider obvious.

RTFM must be an age thing at well. It would never occur to me to not read the owners manual. Regardless, putting anything less than unicorn pee in your car every now and then if you have to will not cause you any problems.

Key being "every now and then". Like jawn pointed out if somebody asks "what fuel?" then the reply has to be very concise or they will be dumping 87 in all the time because "they said it was ok on the forum".
Not sure age is a factor (this time) since it is the guy's "son's" car.

How could there be a class-action suit if the owners manual says "use 93" (91 allowed if 93 not available) and/or warns agains lower octane number in FOUR different places PLUS there is a sticker on the fuel door saying premium fuel only?

If anyone damages the engine by putting low-ON fuel in the tank it's entirely on them.

I'm still waiting for reports of an FR-S/BRZ damaged by using lower octane "every now and then". Are these cars only sold in areas that have 91 or better? Or is it that the possibility of running lower octane if needed was taken into account when they built the thing.

The manual says a "minimum of 91". That to me means exactly that. Now having said that there is no risk to throwing something less in in a pinch. The car is probably not going to have issues but will pull so much timing that you will notice the power drop. Power drops with these are not cool.

You can also use engine oil of non-recommended viscosity and grade, and replace it at twice the recommended interval, and possibly nothing will fail right away. But both the performance and the durability may be affected.
