Another 1st gen here, probably one of the earlier cars (purchased May 2012), ~38k mi (~3k mi on Edelbrock SC). Have not had any issue other than ignition coil CEL back when I was stock. The "hesitation" mentioned by others appears to be common among other FI'd cars, not only Edelbrock.

What does "1st gen" actually mean in this post? I think its a misnomer used here.

I have an early 2013 BRZ. 48k, boosted for 10k. Ive never had cam or ECU issues. I had REALLY bad hesitation and stalling issues while I was on a Delicious tune (not a knock at Delicious, just didnt have good luck with my setup) I went to Dynosty in Louisville and got about 16 hours of dyno time, car drives WONDERFUL now. No issues.

It refers to the pre-2013.5 engines where they originally had different sized lifts than the ones on the engines now.

Is there a definitive method to determine which cars are prone to this problem? I just bought a 2013 BRZ Limited and would like to keep my options open for going FI in the future. My car was built in 12/12... Is there any way to mitigate the problems or is it just a wait and see thing?

For me it's just a suspicion. Tunes that apparently work fine on a bunch of other cars don't work at all on mine.... and the thing that worked around the issue, for the most part, was putting the cam timing back to stock. This tells me there is something fishy going on with the cams/timing/ecu or something related in my car.

Any way to remove all doubt if you think your engine will call it kaputs, is to build it.

If you are only buying an SC unit (the bare minimum) then you need to take a closer look at how complete you think a build needs to be for this car.

I agree wholeheartedly with Sportsguy. Its not just one thing or a few things that make it reliable, the car works dynamically, as soon as the checks n balances are thrown out of wack the rest of the system needs to be brought up to spec.

Isn't there another change in the valvetrain in the 2015 and up models?
i'm asking because of those roller rockers shooting off on people who are FI lately and it's a scary thought

2012 GT86 picked it up September 12. Drove it stock for 3years fast road and a few track days. It's the toy car so gets thrashed (once warm).... I've had the Cosworth SC kit and tune for 5 months and its faultless. I used to get hesitation with the stock tune in cold weather and low revs sometimes but now it smooth as honey from 1500-7500rpms.

ran between 8 and 10 thousand miles on a Sprintex 210 kit with zero issues besides shredded belts- mostly my own fault. I am currently upgrading to a Sprintex 335 and hope for the same. 13 frs but unsure of build date

There definitely isnt enough emphasis on tuning in this community as a whole. I think its more important than anything else.
