BTW, here's my classic in the garage, a 1968 Datsun roadster
I had two earlier gen WRXs before the BRZ. It was nice having the AWD for winter. We've been daily driving the BRZ all year round, but I sure appreciate that the wife's new car is AWD. I've also got her convinced that we can be a 3-car couple. As long as I get something reasonably practical as a winter car (another older WRX?) then I can get just about anything as a third summer/fun car. I'm thinking older Cayman S.

I also came close to buying a Datsun Roadster back in the day. It was a 1600 retrofitted with the 2000 with twin carbs. It was another basket case that I didn't have time, space or money to fix. Just like the Europa I didn't buy.

Egress from FRS

Just woke up from my before lunch nap. I'd like to hear from some of you about getting out of the car, along with any passengers having problems getting out.

I swing 90 degrees so both of my feet are out of the car then I lean forward and use the steering wheel at little bit to move forward and now I use the A-Pillar with the back of my bicep to push out the last bit of me. That last part I just started doing (a-pillar) for about 6 months now. I gained about 80 pounds in retirement and have yet to stop eating. I'm going to turn down the shoveling of food into the mouth probably sooner than later. It gotten old quick. 4 years of eating anything and everything and I think I have it out of my system.

When I take my Mom out to Doctor appointments sometimes we take the FRS. She has short legs and they just reach the ground. I then have to get under her armpits and lift her out. It sure is a spectacle with her walker and everything.

My girlfriend is really tall and is all legs, kinda like long sticks. It is comical to watch her get out of the car. She's 55 and her balance is something to be seen. Kind of a teeter-tooter just walking on dry land. But I love her.

I don't want anybody to scratch the door sills. So plan on getting tutored when going for a drive in my cars. I had one car that I wore out the door sill and said if I ever buy another new car that I will not do that again. Call me anal but I prefer Dennis.

I'm 6'5" 320lbs and have been doing the sports car dance forever. Both legs out is a mistake.

Try one leg out, then lean over that outside leg and push off a little with the inside leg. Then as your body mass ends up outside the car over your bent outside leg, step out with your other leg and stand up. It's hard to describe and is a fluid motion. I should shoot a video clip.

That is the technique both my 80 year old mother and I use. Is actually pretty graceful if done smoothly.

I like left foot out, then lifting myself up from the seat using my left hand on the door sill, swivel and right foot out all in one sweeping motion. I go to the gym and also run regularly, so being fairly muscular helps. Prefer not to swivel my butt in the seat, this FR-S upholstery might not take it for too long. Not something I want to do 20 times a day. Getting in I sometimes almost whack my head on the A pillar.

Even in the WRX I find that the left side seat back bolster leather is starting to look slightly scuffed at the stitching which drives me nuts, so I exit that gently as well. I noticed on previous Honda products after a few years the left seat bolster leather looked pretty beat up, thankfully Subaru leather is holding up better.

I have trouble with my legs and feet the last couple of years. Had 2 operations and my feet are numb most of the time. I used to get out that way before I got sick.

I feel at home pn this thread

I find myself attached to this thread for all the wrong but right reasons. I hate that I understand what you all are talking about and know the old cars listed here very well.I have a couple of old British cars that I work on most of the time and occasionally drive. Thankfully I love to work on them as much as drive them.I always think to myself as my wife and I are driving around the lakes in the 67 Spit and I see some old guy with grey hair, a golf hat and sunglass coming the other way in another British car. What a loser, reliving his high school years, and then I look in the mirror and see that is me too. Those old cars just take you back. Now to the FRS… My son and I have one on order. We are going to mod it together and drive autox events together with it.Bragging rights at home.I consider this car to be the Formula Ford of sports cars, rear wheel drive, “low” power, no aero, all handling.A car you can learn to drive in.Much like I did in a FF way back when. That, the looks and the fact that it is a blank canvas is the reason we choose it.My son will learn old school mechanics on the Spit and MG and new school on the FRS.

hmmmm..........let's see ...... how do I do it ... ??

I open the door, put left foot out .... left hand on the door sill ...... grunt ..... lunge and roll counterclockwise ... push off of the door with the right hand ...... spin on my left foot .... move right foot towards the car ..... continue my vertical combat roll ...... quickly stand up straight ........ close the door.

However, if space is limited, I swing my left leg out, getting a minor Charley horse, groan loudly, try to move my right foot out, getting it jammed against the door scuff pad, groan again ........ thrust myself up and forward at an angle ...... wobble till I'm upright ..... close the door.

I'm a couple of years on the wrong side of 60, 6'6" and about 240lbs. My Subarota is my first "sports" car. I had a 2 liter '73 Mercury Capri back in the late 70s to early 80s and two '88 Acura Integras (a 2dr and a 4dr) from the late 80s until the early 2000s. Both of them died at the hands of redlight runners.

Although I took a couple of shots at running the Capri in local parking lot AutoX meets (it was much more informally organized "back then") the huge majority of my "performance driving" wasn't driving - it was riding. I did a bit of motorcycle road racing in the late 70s and early 80s. Mostly regional club level endurance events on a Honda CB750F. The timing was great, I don't know if the names will mean anything, but I had a chance to watch guys like Kevin Schwantz and Doug Polen as they passed me once every 8 laps or so. Fortunately for my ego they didn't come to every race.

My decision to buy the BRZ was made for me in 2014 by a young lady who was stopped at a light one Sunday morning arguing with her BF on her phone. When she finished, she was so pissed off, she floored the accelerator in her Tahoe and ran the light. Unfortunately, I was just entering the intersection on a KLR 650 (at the time I had it, a VFR800, and a CB900F). To make a long story short, I parked the KLR and my face in the left rear quarter panel of her SUV. Broke lots of things - most were repaired more or less successfully, but my last surgeon told me to be careful, if I messed up what she had done, she couldn't guarantee she could fix it again.

I found that I really didn't have the urge to ride anymore, but still liked to strafe the occasional apex. My wife's '12 V-6 Camry SE didn't quite do it for me. One Saturday, my wife and I were at a local Costco and they had a gorgeous car on display from a local dealer. I'd never seen one like it before. I was ogling it to try to see what manner of exotic animal it was and saw the Subie logo. My wife walked up and I told her, "babe, you're not going to believed this, but that's a fuckin Subaru. I want one." I had looked at a Miata a while back, but there's no way I can wedge myself into one and still operate the controls. I tried on the BRZ, went by the local dealer and test drove one. It was perfect. Now, thanks to Ms. S----y M------r I have a '15 WRB serving as a motorcycle replacement. It's not exactly the same, but it's damn close.

Capt,

I too, had a VFR800 prior to my BRZ. I gave up riding because I was getting more & more concerned that my luck was running out (having never been in a motorcycle accident after years of riding).
I'm enjoying the comfort of the BRZ more than the bike now anyhow - I'm getting more smiles per mile...
