Street legal cage and harness option.

Hi Guys,

Looking to improve safety on the track, and really want to incorporate a ROPS and harness to use my HANS device.

Rules here state I can only fit a 4 point cage, so whilst it's not a perfect solution, it provides a decent compromise between safety on track and being able to drive the car on the street. Looking to go with an AGI cage, as it complies with the CAMS (local racing authority) regs, and includes harness bar.

http://www.agi-precision.com.au/prod...ta-bolt-in/86/

In an ideal world I'd fit a proper race seat and six point harness, which would allow me to use my HANS, but I can't fit a race seat and drive it on the street, so I have to keep the standard seat. Given this, I'm stuck with having to use a 4 point harness, and the problem of submarining during an accident becomes a concern. The best solution I can find to overcome this, is to use the Scroth Profi II ASM FE harness, but I've read conflicting articles on it's compatibility with a HANS device.

https://www.schrothracing.com/compet...m/profi-II-asm

Only other option I can think of, is to fit a six point harness and swap in a proper race seat every time I wanted to track it, but that's obviously less than ideal.

Any suggestions or advice on such a setup?

Hmm you cant put a proper race seat because of street legal regulations, I assume. Have you checked thoroughly regarding those laws, because I know for the most part in the US and Canada they allow for a race seat as long as the original seat belt is still used and the airbags havent been modified.

If you really cant, I'd look into a seat that you can easily interchange with the stock one, it'd be really a shame to put a 4 point cage and not use a 5-6 points harness.

Another option to consider is one of the 3-point compatible HANS systems. For example:

A but pricey, but I bet once you tally up the cage, installation, and belts it's not that far off. Plus you could also sell your current HANS.

I would just do the race seat and risk getting a ticket from the cops if they catch you?

I swap between a fixed back race seat with a 6 point harness and stock seat using the stock seat belt still installed in the car for street -> track trim and vice versa...swapping the seat takes all of 8 minutes on a bad day

just swap seats

"Legality" and the "police" are less of an issue in my thoughts. Most cops will never know you have an aftermarket seat if its a black seat. The key factor is that you remove a factory airbag, which can result in a hefty bill when insurance doesn't cover your injuries when involved in an accident.

Yes, this is more the issue in regards to using another seat on the street here. I could go with something like the Recaro Sportster CS seat, but big dollars, and then have to get the airbags wired up etc.

I did think about the the Simpson product, but if I'm going to the trouble of putting in the half cage, then it's seems logical to install a proper harness anyway. I wouldn't sell my other HANS device, as I need it for when I'm co driving other peoples cars in Endurance races.

It seems the best way to do it, is just get a race seat and swap it in on track days.

You got a little further than I did. I need the rear seats for the kids. I was toying with the idea of cutting a hole in the base of the front seat for the 5th point of the harness, using the harness bar that fits behind the seats. Still, no ROPS and debatable HANS.

Yes luckily for me I don't have to worry about the rear seats, as I have a couple of other "family friendly" cars to use if need be. I will probably just fabricate some sort of rear seat delete, so that I can have more space for carrying tools and wheels to the track.

I have the HANS anyway, and I feel naked when I don't wear one these days on track. Also getting to the point where we're starting to push a little harder too

My wife take the Pajero and that suits me as I can keep the rims and underbody free of damage. I have access to a HANS and have used it navigating. Agree, I'd certainly want it for a crack at lakeside.

Please don't drive around with people in the back of your car with a harness bar, metal objects and bodies tend to not agree with each other.

where does one find a harness bar that goes behind the rear seats? I think once you get that far back, and likely low, it would put the monting location below acceptable angles.
