Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately the Subaru dealership here in Honolulu is owned by the same Toyota/Scion dealership, Servco Hawaii. Hopefully I won't have to wait too long for the dealership to top off the coolant. It's Monday so I know they'll be busy and hoping they don't give me bs about it!

If you're near Schofield and only need a bit to top off, pm me. I just bit the bullet at Toyota and paid way too much of course... But I only needed to top off my overflow tank. I have plenty left over. We can meet and I'll give you some coolant.

Howzit! Thanks for the offer! I'm in town so I got the coolant at one of the Servco Auto Centers. They were able to just top it off for me at no charge. I told them my car was coming in for its first service in a few weeks.

Toyota should top off the coolant free of charge. The block design is garbage and all our motor will end up with BHG sooner or later.

New here. I use to be a 240sx owner and I'm interesest in the BRZ/FR-S. Just curious about reliability.

After reading about the coolant issues I might have some insight. If the overfill is always showing low coolant. I don't believe adding coolant to the overfill fixes the problem. Someone mentioned bad bleeding from the factory. If that's the case I'm pretty sure the closed system is burning off coolant because it has air in it. I assume sometimes they stabilize themselves but in my case they just keep taking coolant from the overfill.

I have NEVER worked on a BRZ so I'm not saying this is apple to apples. But I had a similar issue with a 240 when I had to drain coolant to put on a new timing chain. You need to fill it at the radiator. When the car is cold you open the cap. If it's low you add fluid to the radiator. With the cap removed I would start the car and let it start to warm up. You should start to get bubbles and the fluid rises as it warms up. I used a funnel fitted perfectly to the radiator so the rising fluid would just push into the funnel and not all over the the car and floor. When the car warms up the thermostat would pop and the fluid would drain back into the motor. I would top off the radiator and sometimes it took a lot of fluid to get it back up. I would let a few more bubbles rise out for a minute or so and cap it. No more air in the system.

Once again not sure how the BRZ coolant system works but for most cars the principles are all the same. Just hoping this might help.

My car is now going through the exact same issue as OP, currently at Toyota having the compression test done. I own a 2013 Scion FRS with 27,000 miles. I had my oil changed last Friday along with my transmission fluid and differential fluid. Noticed the car was running really hot, about 210 degrees at its peak. Checked my coolant, overflow was bone dry. I picked up Toyota blue coolant and filled the radiator up first, it only took maybe a cup of coolant. Then I filled up the overflow to a few inches past low, drove my car around for a little, temps were back to normal. Woke up this morning, checked my coolant, pretty much bone dry. Dropped the car off this morning at Toyota and they just called me asking if I had any other information and that there was no leak and now they were going to run a compression test. They also told me that my differential plug was as they put it "finger loose" and differential fluid had sprayed all over the bottom of the car. Not going to name the shop that did the work because I want to talk with them about this first but that was just really disappointing to hear. So definitely freaking out a bit now, specially after reading how much just the parts cost for OP. My main concern is my warranty is technically still valid through 30,000 miles but I have an OFH and Tablet tune on the car.

I'm no longer losing coolant in the overflow reservoir after swapping hoses and using T-Bolt style clamps (not worm clamps) on the radiator hoses. The key was making sure the clamps were tight enough without tearing into the silicon hoses.

This is the Mishimoto radiator and hoses along with the clamps they offer on their site.

After I first installed it, I lost coolant at a slower rate after watching it over time. I went back and tightened some of the clamps even tighter on the hoses on the passenger side by the radiator cap and now my reservoir is at the halfway mark cold, full mark while warm.

I'm thinking the stock system hoses are just not sealed real well from the factory. Some are lucky and don't have this problem, but a good number don't have a tight seal. Would be interested to see if someone changed the factory clamps to T-Bolt style clamps to see results.

These are the clamps I used. There are more expensive constant tension ones, but I feel these do the job. I replaced all the factory clamps.

it pains me to even be part of this thread..

yesterday, i made a few 0-60 pulls on a frontage road while playing with a new camera to check it's audio quality.

today, the interior reeked of something like burned coolant, check my overflow tank, it's dry... unlike the OP, my car is bone stock-- no engine mods at all. really hoping they just didn't burp the system from the factory or something..

Yeah I noticed that, mine is using up a lot of coolant. So it's probably leaking.

My 2014 has been slowly losing coolant. I noticed yesternight whilst changing the oil, it was just below 'min' in the reservoir. I checked this evening after it had been sitting, it was bone dry. Started the car and had an intermittent one-cylinder misfire. I smelled the exhaust, and it was sweet.

16,000 miles, $16k owed. Needs a head gasket.

Ugh.

In all fairness, the tank level fluctuates quite a bit naturally. Like mine will fluctuate between the max mark and just above the min mark. Tried topping off and seeing if it stays put?
I'd probably take to dealer and warranty
