I will try the cruise control trick however does the issue occur after holding the throttle in auto mode above 50 mph without cruise control as well?
In my experience, it's only WITH cruise on. I did some highway driving without cruise control, and everything was ok

I've been experiencing the same issue for a while now as well. I tried the cruise control and after a while it started to have this hard shift issue. I also noticed that the issue becomes more predominant when I have about 30-40% of engine oil. I wonder if there is any correlation between fluids and the hard shifting and lack of rev matching. I been to the dealership and was told that this issue is part of the character of the car which I refuse to believe.

I keep getting these rough shift and all the dealer keeps saying is normal operation of the vehicle. I've been 4 times with no luck.

I've had a tech sit with me while I replicated the problem and he even recommended to change the transmission. But because no codes show up, there is nothing Toyota can replace. This is what the Sevice Manager told me. Honestly, theyy they dont even want to loan me a vehicle anymore because this is "normal" for the vehicle. Ive talked to corporate customer service and they are worthless waste of time.

Awesome find. Might go there on Monday and beg for it. I'm guessing you were able to get it uploaded? Are you getting any results?

Mine is a 2013

What dealer is this? If you don't mind driving out to Grapevine, give them a try. They have been good to me with fixing stuff I had. Ask for JP the service advisor and see he can help you out. CEL or not, it's not normal and shouldn't happen. Fortunately I have not had any of these issues a lot of you are having recently with the auto *knock on wood*.

I bought my auto 2015 FR-S in late May. At about 1K miles, I noticed that occasionally when I was in sport mode (Edit: or manual mode), I would get hard, notchy shifting, particularly going into 2nd or 3rd gear. The most interesting thing, is that if I'm getting the hard shifting, and I pull over, turn the car off, and turn it back on, it starts shifting smoothly again. Exactly as described in this previous post:

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80500

I tried everything I could to consistently recreate the problem to no avail. It happens probably every 3 times I drive the car. Sometimes it will happen when I put it into sport mode(Edit: or Manual Mode) with a cold engine in the morning, and sometimes it will happen after I've been going 80MPH on the highway for half an hour. Seems totally random. I tried all the obvious things like making sure I wasn't letting off the gas during acceleration or doing anything weird. I tried resetting my computer as well by disconnecting the battery for 20 mins.

If it is happening in normal auto mode, it's much more subtle.

I took it into Toyota a couple weeks ago, and was unable to recreate the problem for their tech since I turned the car off. They said that next time it happens and you're in the area, stop by and keep the car on so I can show them the issue. Sure enough, 1 week later I was in and the tech agreed right away that something was wrong. Multiple techs and service managers drove it that night and they all agreed that something wasn't right.

So I left my car there last Tuesday night and just picked it up last night (Monday). They took OBD data, sent it to Toyota, and their response was to check the transmission fluid and reset the computer. They were unable to recreate the hard shifting during the four days and putting close to 80 miles on the car. They ended up adding half a quart of transmission fluid. They still couldn't recreate the problem so they gave it back to me and told me to drive it and see if it comes back. Sure enough, as soon as I pulled out of my work parking lot today, the hard shifting was back.

I did some datalogging comparisons with and without the hard shifting with my Bluetooth OBD reader and have it all in excel if anyone wants to PM me and take a look at it (I'm an engineer who loves data). I wasn't able to really see anything. I also took videos of it happening:

***Watch the tachometer, you can see it stumble going into second gear.

Sorry for the bad quality, youtube wouldn't let me have them in HD.

So here I am. Anyone have any experience with this or ideas on what might be going on? I'm pretty frustrated and don't want to have to drive a rental for another week while they putz around figuring out what's wrong.

Thanks in advance!

Made a little polling thread for this issue if everyone goes to the dealer to complain a TSB will eventually be created directly addressing it and not the idle issue

So I finally went to the dealership and had them take a look at it. The tech went with me on a test drive, but we were unable to recreate the problem. They still took it in and preformed a reflash. Then on the way home it started acting up again, so I drove it back and left the car on. After going on a drive with the tech, he tried to argue that it was the way I was driving, and I should not be shifting at 7 and told the service manager that I was shifting into first at 40MPH, which isn't even possible... Luckily, an engineer from Subaru happened to be there, and I took him for a test drive as well. He immediately noticed the problem and said he would look into it and call me back.

This is solved! Have them do the TSB. We have had multiple confirm the tsb solves all these issues. Check out this post:
