what is CARB legal? (haven't heard that term before) Are you talking specifically about a OFT tune or Ecutek or something else?

It's USA speak, specifically California, for meeting emissions compliance. I think you'll be okay.

Interesting, I would have thought the emissions would be more related to the ECU tuning rather than the kit?

So people running FI on the 86 on your 91octane, do they use OFT or Ecutek tunes? Seems like most of the reflashing tunes specify a premium 93 or E85 fuel..

CARB (California Air Resources Board) has a set of guidelines that limit the tailpipe emissions of vehicles in that state. That's primarily NOx and hydrocarbon emissions.

You can do tricky things with the three-way catalyst... but generally speaking, this means that the ECU tune is maintaining a pretty tight range of cylinder temperature/pressures.

Here are some popular graphs that illustrate emissions and how things change with temp/pressure/O2.

Too hot (or lean), and you get NOx. Too much pressure (or rich), and you get HC.

CARB tunes keep the mixture near stoichiometry (chemical balance) and cylinder temps/pressures low enough. You may not get the best power or fuel economy from a CARB tune... but it's likely to be very reliable and safe.

That, and catalytic converters. But that conclusion requires logical thinking, something California legislators lack.

(I realise most people probably choose a kit and have stuck with it, so probably not many people know what it's like installing other kits)
Ease of installation probably the easiest would be sprintex non-intercooled kit, but low boost and probably not to good in warmer climates. They also have intercooled option

He is correct. Never installed a forced induction kit in my life. Brother and I did it in under 5 hrs in my garage. Won't even have to remove bumper for non-intercooled kit. As simple as unbolting throttle body, remove stock intake manifold, drop in new manifold with supercharger, run all the lines, and bolt back throttle body.

That being said. I eventually went intercooled and flex fuel and power is now feeling dull for my taste. If I had another chance probably would go edelbrock for the chance at more power or possibly even turbo.

Since you're next door to Australia don't forget about Harrop, shouldn't be that much different than edelbrock.

The phantom ESC is by far the easiest but its not mass produced so doesn't really count...

Well... you could make the same sustainable power as a Sprintex kit with an Ace header and solid tune, with way less work

What does sustainable mean? Because no, you aren't.

The sprintex kit really needs to run e85 full time especially if non inter cooled to fight off heat soak.

Thanks for the replies, are their any opinions about which kit would be best suited to 93octane fuel? (our 98Ron is the best I can get - no E85 at the pumps)

I assume this will mean a low boost application.
