I believe other car companies are doing similar things. This may be just the beginning of a shit storm. VW's damage will be mitigated some if other manufacturers get caught, since they weren't the "only ones" doing it. When everyone does it, it doesn't seem so bad all of a sudden.

What makes you so sure? Every other clean diesel vehicle sold in the USA comes equipped with an expensive Urea exhaust injection system. VW was the only maker not outfitting this feature to it's cars. Stands to reason this is basically why they cheated - they didn't want to pay to equip the cars with that device (which reported would have added $335 to the cost of each car).

This time it's Toyota's trucks and SUV. No it's not their diesel engines.

The Hilux has been associated with terrorist groups so long that there is a model kit of one! The model goes to great length to be a "generic" pickup and not identified as a Hilux anywhere but it can't be anything else and they give you separate letters for the tailgate that spell Toyota if you use them just right.

I just cannot believe how wrong I was. I cannot believe a real car company would screw up this bad and piss governments off like this.

That is just someone stirring crap up for no reason. Toyota is pretty much the only pickup sold in the middle east, and no car dealership is going to say no to a member of any muslim royal family when they ask to buy 50 pickup trucks, even though everyone knows exactly what they are going to.

Other nonsense manufacturers have pulled:
GM classifies the PT Cruiser as a light truck so it doesn't have to meet the same emissions as passenger cars (and it sure doesn't).
GM killed 124 people with ignition switches they knew would result in fatalities.
Takata: Don't worry our airbags only kill and maim some people!
Toyota: Lost over a billion dollars because of "unintended acceleration" that was proven, after exhaustive investigation, to be false and in 100% of the fatalities where it was thought to be a failure of the car it was a failure of the driver. So Toyota got punished by shitty drivers, essentially.
Anywho.. I say we require VW to pay for that wall that Trump wants to build.
But seriously, it stands to reason that anyone pursuing legal action against VW for being defrauded most likely have a case.
The difference is those companies did not lie to governments world wide. VW did. People who crave power don't mind mistakes, but they hate people lying to them more than anything. I would not be surprised if every government followed Germany in demanding VW fix this problem within the month or stop allowing any VW products to be sold, and also fine VW as much as they possibly can even though it will probably destroy Germany's economy yet again.

I still cannot believe any real car company pulled this garbage on purpose. It is just mind boggling. I hope VW closes and dies because I don't like any of their modern vehicles, not because of this silly scandal.

that was always my truth. No idea how a company that made some pretty awesome cars in the 80's went so wrong with such horrific problems in the past couple of decades.

Although if I could get a 2015 awd tdi for say $2000 and never have to pass any emissions anywhere it might be worth it.

Here's the thing though most other companies don't sell diesel cars, VW do so I don't see how this could be a problem for other manufacturers.

Emissions ratings can be fudged on gasoline cars a well. The focus is on diesel because that is what they got caught on but there is nothing saying gas cars don't have the same sort of set up.

True but I feel that if it had been widespread, to a point of affecting most if not all petrol engines, then someone would have found out before now...one would hope at least

This is example of mis-represented statistics.
Take a room full of people. Say 80 people. There is going to be a tallest person in the room. Remove that person and there is still a tallest person in the room. Another example. Heart disease is the biggest killer among adults. So everyone goes on a diet and walks 5 kilometers a day. Then there will be different disease that will be the biggest killer of adults.
