My apologies. My comments weren't meant to be a direct attack at anyone in particular or their beliefs. Just wanted to point out the fact that every person pollutes in one way or another. Some just choose to live a more environmentally friendly lifestyle and there's nothing wrong with that. The issue in this case isn't so much that, but the horrible business ethics demonstrated by VW.

I didn't read it as such. As a mechanical engineer, I struggle with the idea that my very profession is based on environmental upheaval. Using fossil fuels to mine and refine all manner of substances into machines that do more of the same. The whole industrial revolution, really, in a geological blink of an eye has turned everything upside down. /thread jack.

Look at the total energy budget required to create 0.85 gal ethanol from the point of planting seeds onward; extracting & shipping raw materials, creating fertilizer, watering, spraying, harvesting, shipping, processing...

Ok, so switchgrass. Whatevs, Dubya. He can subsidize Deez Nuts.

It's not out of the realm of possibility. There are pretty big rural areas on the planet where it's still the norm.

The number of horses required to replace all the vehicles currently in use would be an ecological disaster that would make fossil fuels look like heaven. The land required, feed and waste disposal would all be near impossible. Hell, the methane and nitrates alone would probably do us in.
