Sometimes my whole drive to work is completed below 2000 rpm (17 to 19 km) depending on which route I take). The traffic is bad enough that I can't go over 60km/h so I stay in the highest gear that can handle the load. I get 8.5l/100km if I only have to go to work and back.

Add some highway driving and it frops to 7.9l/100km. I also did notice that it changes a lot smoother at higher rpm so that is where I play on weekends.

Does your engine lug or rattle when accelerating right after shifting at 2000rpm ?

On a flat surface with a very light foot I have to shift to at least 2800rpm for 1st,2nd & 2300-2500rpm 3rd,4th,5th,6th or else I'm lugging the engine. I don't get how some people here shift so low. If I was going uphill I'd have to shift even higher! 3500rpm max.

Or is the light lugging, chattering engine sound normal when accelerating between 1800-2000rpm?

Also, how high can you shift in 1st&2nd gear while the car is cold? because I have to shift up to 3300-3500rpm while taking off uphill at a round about in the mornings.

No, it doesn't lug. It is usually light throttle when I am in gas saving mode. I figure the computer controlled throttle won't let me do anything bad.

Wider throttle opening and low RPM saves fuel.

When I am approaching a quarter tank or less, I shift when the shift indicator instructs me to do so.

Otherwise, I shift anywhere from 3000-4000 RPM for local driving.

3K till engine reaches full temp.
4K-4.5K normally after warmup, but I use 6th above 39mph in traffic.
6K-7K when I'm having fun (light's set at 7K), but I have hit the 7.5K limiter a couple times.

Just tested it out on my manual and it doesn't like it.
Does automatic allow driver to shift at lower rpm or something ?
shifting at 2000 is just really low in 1st&2nd, not saying you shouldn't do it or anything i'm just surprised how low you can shift in your 86 without lugging. :O

but since im bored.

i dont get how you guys manage to drive around at 2k rpm or less.

maybe i'm just super paranoid about lugging my engine, or maybe its because im at 3500ft above sea level so i make a lot less power then you sea level folks, but my engine does NOT feel happy down that low. even in 2nd gear, i have to accelerate SUPER slow to not lug the engine. anything over 2nd gear, i cant accelerate basically at all without at least some minor lugging. and i figure its much better for my engine to turn some extra rpm and burn some extra gas versus lugging around and messing with my bearings.

i guess you can coast around that low... but in my mind that's pretty dangerous in traffic. just because im at a higher rpm, doesnt mean im going dangerously fast in traffic.. but it does mean if something happens in traffic, i have the ability to respond without having to down shift first. defensive driving yo. my city is full of retarded drivers. i might have to pull some emergency maneuvers at any time, which can often involve quick acceleration to get out of the way of some idiot/dangerous situation. definitely cant do that if your coasting around in 6th at 2krpm.

and that's all without even getting into the fun factor stuff.

if you're talking about fun... because of that wonderful torque dip, really there is no fun until after 4500.
Exactly what I was thinking... For all you guys who shift at 2000 rpm and down. Do you only shift that low at higher gears, when the road ahead is descending or do you shift like that in every gear everywhere you go ?

I was wondering the same thing. My car will always chatter when I am coming from a dead stop all the way up to 2000rpm. I didn't really notice it that much at first but I think my Rotrex made it very noticeable.

I haven't driven a manual FR-S, so I can't say. But in the auto, I'm in 6th gear at 38 mph.

I'll shift that low to minimize noise.
