Something else to be mindful of, cops are cracking down on modified cars really hard in SoCal due to the street racing crowd. Considering where you are moving to i don't think cops will be too bad on you. Could be worse you could be in Irvine where cops are quick to write you a ticket for tint alone...

I've had a few cops pull over my MK1.5 MR2 with a JDM 3SGTE. They all wanted to inspect my engine, but none of them got me for anything. And the engine bay was crazy modified too, but with OEM parts (and some shiny parts plus seeing AN fittings/braided lines everywhere). Maybe they saw the Toyota badge on my W2A intercooler and thought everything was stock. Unless you get a cop that knows a lot about mods (maybe someone in the traffic division), I don't see you having a problem.
I had to do some shady things though to register my car... glad it's over with. I'm keeping my BRZ smog-legal to avoid all the headaches.

Just make it look factory and expect to spend $250 or so. Most people won't know the difference if it LOOKS factory. My turbo kit was powder coated/ceramic coated wrinkle/flat black to match factory components - CHP made me pop my hood when I got pulled over and they didn't realize it's not original.
Another option is to make some sort of cover for the front part of your engine bay. My friend made one out of aluminum and painted it black. Looks sorta original but covers up everything that is a dead giveaway. Then again idk what will work for certain, I haven't had to smog mine yet. But when I smog my other cars im usually fine with $250

I don't know about bringing an out of state car in and registering it, but for our cars that are already here none of us should have had to smog it yet. New cars are exempt for the first 5 (or 6?) years.
It does suck for car people, but we've got cleaner air for it so we can see the beaches and babes! |
