Its for sure NOT ram air. The scoop is behind the bumper in an area that gets fresh air. During some pretty hard runs yesterday, I found the whole box was cool to the touch. Which I wasn't excpecting since part of the box gets hot air from the radiator blown on it.
![]() I thought the filter was pretty small at first, then i compared it to an STI filter. Surprising actually. ![]() Quote:

I plan to do a resonator and noise generator delete/plug and filter change...should improve/increase the sound and somewhat the throttle response. Plus it declutters the engine bay a little and removes a little weight up front... not much but hey it's a few lbs that doesn't truely need to be there IMO. Done it with my other vehicles and have liked the results (though MAP sensored honda's...)

I'd like to do a full resonator, noise tube etc delete too. Smoother pipe replacing the accordion piping. And not sure what it looks like under the bumper, but if there's a more direct path to fresh air that would be cool too

A friend has had 1 in his S2K for 4 years now and he loves it but you dont get the sound like you would with a "cold air intake" set up. S2k's seem to get the most power with the factory air box and from what iv heard the K&N filter seems to be the best. But this is what iv seen from S2000's
I think you'll see the same thing with the FR-S/BRZ I have a feeling you will see the most power increase with a Factory box and a aftermarket filter K&N, TRD so on. But you'll loses that sound you would get with a cold air set up. But i have no facts to back this up. Id rather get a few more HP the have the sound + exhaust is one of the first things on my list. I'd like to see a simpler, lighter box and tube to the throttle body. An also get rid of the sound tube. All that plastic and rubber has to weigh quite a bit.
Perhaps there can be a tube that goes straight down to the ground from the filter box? Though you'd have to cut, or create another underbody panel? |

yeah a nice light aluminum or carbon box and streamline the flow slowly... of course that may not fit with a sc or turbo setup..... but maybe?

Wow, I'm amazed at how efficient that looks. On second thought, I don't think there's going to be much to gain there. I might remove the sound tube and resonator for room, but I bet that resonator is removing a lower pressure resonance to help smooth out the torque curve. (Please for the love of god don't read that as smooth out the torque DIP. I don't know what's causing that and I'm not trying to say this is helping it.)

Agreed, but with a caveat. I've seen some cars that have HORRIBLE intake paths. Cleaning up the flow is the only real advantage of a 'cold air intake' and often times you can remove some bends or restrictions with out spending a ridiculous amount of money. If the intake system is good from the factory you wont gain a thing though. My beater Neon took it's intake from inside the drivers side of the bumper cover. The air entered through an oval about 1.5 by 2 inches, turned 90 deg in a ~2.5 inch radius bend, went down about a foot for a resonator, turned 180 deg about ~4 inch radius bend, back up about 1.25 feet, 90 deg into filter box, through the filter box, into a bellows tube, and then into the intake at down angle of about 15 deg, to then have to turn ~105 deg to get into the intake runners... The resonator completely blocked off the bottom area of the bumper cover so there wasn't any flow coming in from there and there was a cover over the fog light opening. The only air entering was coming from air leaks in the wheel well and around the headlight which had a gasket. I removed the resonator box leaving only the 90 bend going into the filter housing. I then remove the cover over the fog light whole to help move air into the area when the car is moving. The sound inside hasn't changed any that I've noticed, but it's got be getting more air. |

Looks like it wouldn't be too hard to turn it into a ram air intake. Depending on how much room there is up front, you could hook up a bit of flexible hose to the end of the fresh air scoop and route to towards the front of the car. I don't know if there would be any benefit though. It certainly won't sound any faster like an aftermarket intake would.

If tomorrow goes as planned, I will find out how efficient that intake is. I have about 4 main tests to perform to prove or disprove a Cold Air intake. Yes, one of those tests is seeing what happens with removing the sound generator and resonator. And no, my butt dyno isn't what I am using to prove this.
