Most cars have a ducted airbox. Hell, my tow vehicle, a 1991 E-530 ambulance has a pipe that goes from the front of the nose near the headlight to the engine's intake. My '86 Corolla Deluxe had one too. "Cold Air" has been a gimmick in the aftermarket for a VERY long time.

Ford has had open-element K&N style filters on Mustangs for a while just because people think they're better.

To be fair, they usually do it right and have a heat shield that forms an airbox when the hood is down. There's usually an opening to the fender as well so it gets cool air.

Open the PDF doc in the first post and scroll down a bit. The air behind these headlights will be in a vacuum (if I'm not mistaken) and there's a fair amount of bends so I think there's still gains to be had. Even just getting some clean air to the area near the head light would help as it looks like that area will be in a vacuum while driving. A cut out in the front bumper foam and a scope to divert some air from the grill opening up to the head light area might be all the gains we're going to get though. |

I'm sure intakes will make some power on a dyno. Unless it's a significant amount, I doubt the dyno evidence offered will show any gains outside the normal variance of any given dyno comparison. The intakes that do show big gains might do that by manipulating the maf sensor, making the car run lean for a while before the ECU compensates or the engine detonates. Guess we shall see soon. I'm going to guess TRD/SPT will release an intake that adds no power, doesn't manipulate the maf and makes cool sound effects. I'll probably buy that one!
