That said, I've been trying to figure a way to get decent high pressure and cool air from the front of the car, but the only things I can think of is the grill (too many bends) or cuting an inlet into the bumper (would look awful). Maybe we'll be taking the head light out like the mustang guys.

stock airbox takes air from right above the radiator, just like my current airbox in my celica....

or you could slap on a k&n filter to the stock intake, remove the box, and get the same sounds for about $50, if added sound is all you are after.

For a stock intake design the fr-s/brz looks pretty good IMO.

the sound is nothing close. I gutted the crap out of my stock intake on the k20 with a k&n and it was barely noticeable. I'll probably pick one up for shows cause in all honesty the the ARC filters suck for the motor. They hardly filter crap out. As for daily driving, I'll be on a a gutted stock air box for my brz. If I dont go with an s/c I'll definitely have one for bling factor for car meets.

Really? Don't have experience with a k20 but on my friends s2000 he added a k&N and removed the box and the thing SCREAMS. has a similar intake layout to the fr-s too.

I can think of a billion better ways to spend $1200 but to each their own

i doubt this intake will come in at 1200$, since its just the box and i dont see the arm they usually make along with the induction box, it will probably be about 600-700$. I had both the arm and the induction box, i paid 300 for both used though :3

Its mostly really noticeable during the cam change. At least its like that on the 2ZZ-GE.

On the stock airbox you can hear the changeover but its subdued, with an intake the damn thing wails like a banshee during the changeover. (VTAK kicked in yo!)

But before that it sounds pretty much the same as stock. (well aside from the intake induction sucking sound)

Thanks calum for that diagram, where'd you find that??

Wow this intake is basically a CAI in stock-form! I wonder if any meaningful gains will be had from upgrading...

It's a ram air, technically. And no, there won't be meaningful gains from upgrading. Same story in the WRX/STI which has a very similar setup, ntake inlet scoop being fed from right from the grille, has almost no gains until moving up to a significantly larger turbo.
