What if you're in the middle of nowhere, with no cell phone service, no other vehicles to jump from, it's getting dark, etc.?

As @rxlynn pointed out, the owner's manual says:
Starting the engine when the battery is discharged

The engine cannot be started by push-starting.
The manual makes no distinction between the keyless ignition and the keyed ignition, so getting a BRZ with a physical key probably wouldn't help you. It probably has something to do with getting power to the fuel pump.

If thats another reason (which doesn't make a difference in reality), what are the others?

Can be done! I've tested this by pushing the car to "on" then rolled down a hill and slipped the clutch in 3rd, viola it started. Personally I think 2nd gear would best, if pushing

To me, it's a gimmick - I can handle the "inconvenience" of turning the key...
What I don't like is that in order to switch from Engine On to Accessory mode (i.e. if I've arrived at my destination, but want to finish a phone call or song), I have to cycle through every mode.
With a key, I could just switch back and forth without interrupting power.

Couple this with the fact that the BRZ headunit takes about 2 minutes to boot up and it's not very good.

That plus, heaven forbid, I stall - with a key, I physically turn it to crank the engine (no way to mess it up).
Whereas with the push start, don't push it hard enough/deep enough, and the engine might not start up. If this happens in traffic or even on a track (under stress, it is actually not that unlikely), it could be a recipe for disaster.

But can it be done when the battery is dead? I think you need to repeat the experiment after leaving your lights on all night.

I hate this as well, however if you push the start button 3 times quickly and consecutively while still rolling to a stop it will go to accessory mode without cutting power to the head unit. It's tried and true. I now do this all the time to finish a call or song on the radio lol.

Hmm. Good question. I guess I misunderstood your original post. But if I had to guess, I would think if you got the car rolling enough to pop the clutch and roll over the engine to get the alternator to make enough juice to power the button it might be enough to get it to switch on, thus started, but you would have to be quick with the push button. I'll have to try it next summer as the car is going away for the winter soon.

It's a bit of a moot point as the car has a immobilizer... The physical key has a chip like the fobs do and it takes power to deactivate.

This has been common for years guys, push starting a car isn't really a viable solution (especially since the vast majority of cars on the road these days are automatic).

I can answer this because I've completly killed the 9lb braille battery in my car once. The car can not be turned on at all with the button when you have a dead battery. Because of that you can't push start the car like you could with a normal key.

The only way to start it at that point was to get a jump box or a traditional jump start from another car. After about 1 minute of charging the car it started right up and I just drove it around for awhile before shutting it down.

So we have conflicting information here... Ranatsu, have you actually tried doing it? Gords Zenith has tried and said it worked.

It's sounding like one person had a battery that was dead enough that the engine couldn't really crank properly, vs. a battery dead enough to not even allow the electronics to function.
