I finally got around to reviewing the logging I did in the 2nd session of the day last Saturday... in a nutshell yeah I need an oil cooler if I am to continue driving like this. Oil temps peaked at 276F that session, and keep in mind that was in the cooler morning session.

Wow. I wonder how hot mine gets on Mines Rd. runs. I wonder why they didn't try to combat this more from the factory considering they know what people are going to be doing with these cars.

Sigh. Even more reason for me to order the Perrin oil cooler.

Easy. They weren't expecting so many talented individuals to push an OEM NA.

They did however added a couple perks by having an easy to work with front end, front corner pockets, and ample space within the bumper and beam to cool however you like. So yea cool away.

Several of us have used Mines as our testing grounds
You don't go WOT nearly as much on a road like Mines as you would on track for sure. So I doubt you would see such high temps on the street/canyon driving.

The general consensus is: street use only, oil cooler is recommended but not necessary. But if you track, seriously consider getting one. If you are FI and you track, absolutely necessary.

I saw 265F oil temps on Mines after 5 mins of spirited driving WITH an oil cooler. I'm FI though.

I got no more than 220F on my FI with an oil cooler. It wasn't a very hot day though since we hit it early in the morning.

I considered the Fullblown oil pan at one point. It has an extra quart oil capacity, which they say helps with cooling, and cooling fins on the bottom of the pan as well. I don't want to prolong cold start oil warmup... though I know certain coolers have a thermostat.

I really would like to avoid taking off the bumper cause of the tabs breaking. A couple of you guys mentioned a DIY oil cooler that didn't require taking off the front bumper, how did you guys find that? It was the one that bisects one of the radiator hoses. @PMok @RehabJeff86 @mkivsoopra

I didn't run any logs with my OFT. Would have been a good idea though, given that I had to switch to 91 on Sunday. But I didn't feel like the ECU was pulling timing. I plan on staying N/A with no more than 5-6 track days a year and I normally run E85.

Technically speaking, oil coolers that uses the coolant is not as effective as the normal air cooling oil coolers. Because the air temp will always be a lot lower than the coolant that's cooling the oil.

I did a DIY 16 row oil cooler so I've pull my bumpers off a couple of times. I didn't break any tabs and it was my first time taking off any bumper. I did find putting the bumper back harder and lots of patience than pulling it off.

its almost unavoidable to take off ur front bumper. So consider u might have to take it out at least once. the tabs breaking only happens after x amount of time taking the bumper off n put them back on.

most of our fellow 86s "spirited" drivers told me to plan all the stuff u need to do to ur car that required taking off the front bumper altogether... we are on the same "never taken our front bumper off" boat

If i remember correctly, jsimon was on e85 and his oil temp still reads at 265

I considered that. Oil temperature isn't a huge concern for me. I know the oil will last longer with a cooler, and with stock these cars do run hot. But I don't quite understand the threshold where oil stars to shear, or when it will harm the engine, or seriously degrade high quality synthetic.

The temperature readout 121 F said on saturday @ T Hill. I am a novice, but I didn't encounter problems with power. I popped my hood after every session, and there was at least 50 minutes after every session to cool down.

I was more concerned with the air cooled oil coolers because the temperatures actually read too low. I don't know if the oil will get hot enough to evaporate moisture during winter.

I'm only using Redline or Amsoil 5w-20 and change @ 3.5k (E85)
