I Have figured that sub 400whp, manual all the way. Between 4-500 whp, automatic will be the cheapest (and most reliable) option with the SSP upgrades (around $2,000) anymore whp then that and you'll start to have to look at the supra V160 or 154, and comparable tranny swaps for a reliable form of a transmission at that level.

We just finished a customer's car here with a 300whp build on his automatic, and it was a blast. Given the speed it can go up through the gears now, for most people it would be faster than a manual. With the low end torque it now possesses it's very close to perfection.

exactly what I thought, I think the longer gears of the auto becomes an advantage and the shifting speed also should help keeping the boost steady all the time ..I think auto is a better match for FI, in general and I probably made a mistake by never considering that option..but I never thought it would be fast enough.. no wonder the new Corvette C7 Z06 offers an 8 speed auto (supposedly it shifts about .10 sec faster than PDK).. I think the newer auto trannies (ZDF and such) are even better than the robotic/DCT systems since the hesitation in traffic is non-existent in traditional autos

Yeah I know. I was trying to figure out why that is a bad thing...

Ahh, well personally, I like even gearing.

Technically wouldnt the auto have a theoretical higher top speed from the stock FD?

for those who think manual might be a better option for track use, I'd say think twice
I don't know how many of you pass 127mph on a track day but I think I'd be much happy with the auto gearing..

I've put them side by side with the speeds on each gear (the one one the left is manual)

Liking it because it seems even? Kind of weird.
You need to figure out the max speed at each gear, then figure out if you would have use of 6th gear. Not only do we not have a V8, it is literally just a gear for highway dd driving for economy.

its unfortunate since this is a pretty nice drivers car, it gets economy gearing, not sporty gearing :'(

I would agree with you for the first few gears, definitely not 6th though.

VA is full of aggressive assholes and having no torque makes it hard to avoid them when they do something stupid.

If there's decent clutch options then I'll probably stick with the MT. The shifter blew my mind when I took one for a test drive. I'll probably check out an auto though, just to be sure..
Get headers, fp/op, maybe a catback if you want to fill out the valences in the rear, and go with EcuTek for the tune, and find a good tuner. Bye bye torque dip and trust me, you'll have enough power to get around the aggressive idiots that you should avoid. The aggressive idiots that are way faster, just let them by.

Or, if that's not enough, add a SC and you'll have more than enough power to avoid almost ALL of the aggressive a-holes out there.
