Used to use Royal Purp once upon a time, but I made the switch to Penzoil plat and never looked back.

I used to use that until I learned that the US version of the oil had a HTHS rating that was crazy low. 1.3 I think. Good for efficiency, bad for wear.

I was just joking around on that part. I do like Mobile 1, Penzoil, and Castrol but I used Castrol GTX on my old car.

Kendall GT1. Old School oil! Actually, I really have no idea. Does anyone have hard data to support that Subarus "don't like Mobil 1"?

Found some interesting info on Kendall Oil, for anyone who cares:

"Part of the ConocoPhillips family of lubricants, Kendall Motor Oil enjoys a dramatic heritage. The Kendall Refining Company was founded in 1881 in Bradford, Pennsylvania, with the goal of refining local Pennsylvania Grade Crude Oil into kerosene, lubricants and greases. With more than 125 years of experience to draw upon, Kendall Motor Oil has led the industry with a number of significant firsts.
In 1928, Kendall introduced the first oil designated for winter use as well as the first 2,000-mile motor oil (unprecedented at a time when the standard was 500-1,000 miles), and later developed the first pre-packaged, factory-sealed, one-quart oil can."

Does HTHS directly influence power consumption? Viscosity is going to give the oil pump power consumption, and the friction modifiers and stuff will influence the actual engine mechanical efficiency. HTHS does tend to go up with higher viscosity oils but I think it's just a correlation...

HTHS, High Temperature High Sheer, is a measure of how the oil keeps its viscosity when under high heat and pressure, exactly the conditions in your engine's main bearings and other areas.

If it keeps its viscosity, it "floats" the parts apart better. But, this also puts more drag on the parts. If it's thinner, the parts will move easier, but won't have the protection needed when there's a lot of load on the engine.

So for efficiency, a low HTHS oil is preferable. But for engine longevity, especially an engine that sees high loads, a high HTHS oil is preferred.

That doesn't quite make sense to me, retaining viscosity under high temperature and pressure doesn't necessarily cause more drag, although I might be wrong. If the bearing surfaces are closer together the "drag" forces could become greater because the moving surfaces are in closer proximity. Although I don't doubt that higher HTHS oil will generally have higher viscosity and thus higher parasitic power consumption, but I highly doubt that it's a casual thing.

Mobil 1 is out because Subaru engines just don't like the stuff. Not going to even risk it since there are other choices.

Penzoil Platinum has a great reputation on BobIsTheOilGuy.com. So for the BRZ, it'll likely get that with a Purolator PureONE filter (99.9% filtration).

Redline has some of the highest HTHS ratings for US oil. So the STI gets that. For now I use the PureONE filters on the STI, but I'm considering switching to Canton oil filters for their high flow and 8 micron filtration.

Hmmm I dont like to hear that . There shouldn't be any jumping through hoops to order our Oil. We have the option of delivering oil directly to your door or you can pick it up at the warehouse. Im not sure why your friend thinks he needs to pick it up

But on the bright side... IM HERE If you guys want to get Amsoil im real easy to get in touch with and delivery usually takes 2-5 days from the day order was placed. We have warehouses all across the country to ensure fast delivery times.

And if all else fails there's always our website to place orders! http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/?zo=5001506

But if you buy through me off this forum ill be sure to hook it up! :happy0180:

Ive been using Motul since my first change to Synthetic (since that what the stealership uses).

I honestly dont know if any of these oils make a big or even a noticeable difference....

That really depends on what you consider "Noticeable". Changing your oil 6-8 times a year to changing your oil Once or Twice is pretty noticeable to me. Remember its Oil not a turbo... when you change oil 90% of the people wont notice the difference because they are subtle differences. Cleaner feeling start and idle, smoother shifts and improved gas milage. They're things that the average person doesn't really feel but its there. The average person also wont physically see it. When was the last time you ripped of your head to check the walls on your cylinders?

The things that separate the good oils from great ones you see in the long term with the car. Its the difference from your car dying at 130,000 and 200,000. Its maintaining the 35mpg when the car has 150,000 miles on it.

You may not notice a difference the second you change the oil, but looking back after you've owned the car for 10-15 years and your engine and drivetrain still feels brand new you'll be happy you went with quality oil. :happy0180:
