Painting Emblems
So I painted my Emblems about 6 months ago, noticed yesterday one has had some paint chip away, right in the corner.
I painted them with krylon spray paint, 2 coats of primer, 3 gloss black, 4 clear coat. I could patch this spot with some model paint, but I was wondering if anyone else who does this does anything to prep the emblems, like sanding?

Just my opinion - You'll never get a home job that lasts through weather and time.
Prepping will help.

Is that another paint chip on the trunk above the emblem?

I think its a speck, it just looks like a chip or cut in the photo. I live in GA, there's a lot of trees and so forth here.
disheartening. I was hoping some other folks who have done this, or do this regularly might be able to comment. Maybe there are better brands? Honestly Krylon is what they sell at walmart so I can only assume there are better more lasting options?

What kind of prep work did you initially do?
I would recommend removing all the paint you applied via soaking it in a small dish filled with purple power, castrol super clean, etc. It will take several hours for it to start loosening, but you can use brush to help it along. Once you have the paint off, sand it a bit wih 240 to provide some teeth. Wash it with the PP, CSS,etc to remove any contaminents. Thoroughly rinse and dry. Prime it and once dry, sand with a higher grit to smooth, reprime, and repeat until you have a smooth surface. Once your final layer of primer is cured, apply two coats of paint and follow with two coats of clear. Better quality paint will yield better results. I've had good luck with duplicolor. |

Like the post said above, plastidip is a much easier alternative than using spray paint and having to prep, prime, coat, clear and let dry. Not to mention you can get two cans of plastidip, a can of black and a can of clear for a glossy finish.

Interesting, I hadn't considered using plastidip under regular spray paint.
I was partuicularly attached to the red lettering, as I liked how well it fit the red black color scheme. I found a chrome black wheel paint at autozone the other day, maybe Ill try that?

I used krylon on my original emblems and couldn't get it to not chip in the front. Paint stuck well, but that location takes a beating. Switched to Toyota emblems after that.

Everyone is saying they used "Krylon". There are many different types of Krylon paints. I used Krylon for plastics on my +50 rc boat and it is still on there. Yes it does make a difference.

Plastidip for badges. They're so exposed it's not worth the hassle of constant repainting.

It could not hold up to the abuse the front of the car sees. Used the same stuff on my '86 piston' emblems on the side and it has held up great for 18k miles. |
