Well I got popped up in Bellingham a month ago for no front plate - received a traffic infraction for not having required equipment, not a fix-it ticket. Probably didn't help that it was a motorcycle cop. Now I get to drive up there to to go to court and mitigate it to a non-traffic and just pay the fine or less hopefully. Price you pay for not having a front plate on. Think I'm going to try and mount mine to the passenger sun visor so I can just flip it down if needed..

So I am just curious about why states are so adamant about front plates. Do they really get used. I would like to hear from a policeman about their usefulness. Driving down a street or highway there is no way they can read your number when passing. The only time I could see it as useful is in slow city traffic at stoplight when no other cars are in the way. So really, what is their purpose? Is it so critical to see that a car actually has plates? Some people put fake plates on anyway, who would know. Seem like a ridiculous bureaucratic thing to me that really serve no meaningful purpose. If someone wants to know if the car is licensed, look at the back. Time for the common man to rise up and fight this unreasonable burden, this injustice! or maybe not.

Read the law one more time before thinking of mounting it to the visor.

(5)(a) Display. License plates must be:

(i) Attached conspicuously at the front and rear of each vehicle if two license plates have been issued;

(ii) Attached to the rear of the vehicle if one license plate has been issued;

(iii) Kept clean and be able to be plainly seen and read at all times; and

(iv) Attached in a horizontal position at a distance of not more than four feet from the ground.

(b) The Washington state patrol may grant exceptions to this subsection if the body construction of the vehicle makes compliance with this section impossible.

Resurrecting this for an update. Anyone have any luck with this? Specifically if they have oil cooler installed? Before some rocket scientist rolls in and fires the "non-legal street mods" I said oil cooler, not turbo.

I've have a few friends (GTi, MR2) never had them on and has never gotten pulled over (over 4+ years). I haven't had my plates on for 7 months while passing by too many cops and none of them do anything. Just don't park your car at the side of the street because meter checkers will issue a no plate ticket.

Got a fix-it-ticket Sunday. County Sheriff in town of all places. Not my town, the next one over that I frequent. I've started the exemption process (Sure I'll be denied). Just curious if anyone had succeeded with a Twin.

From my and my friends' experience it's a crapshoot.
Some people would have no trouble with having no front plate in years, others would get two tickets in one month.
Seems like it averages out to 1-2 fixit tickets a year. I consider it to be a "no front plate" tax.

Every one of you are missing out. Buy the Raceseng front plate mount. Schedule some time with NASA in their wind tunnel for alignment. Best mod ever. Doubles the engine output and the car will turn left better than anything out there. So NASCAR. You're welcome.
