Maybe should have bought or buy an FJ if you are worried about depreciation
lol! You aren't reading my posts. I'm only going to be "worried" until the car flips.

I'm not really worried so much as in shock. I didn't expect this car to drop like it did. Then again, I've come from cars that don't really drop in value all that much. Mustang cobras sold for $36k NEW and you can still find them selling for $25k-$30k. They are 10 year old cars with incredibly out of date technology.

I sold mine a year later for a profit. Mods and car were paid for.

Truthfully, it's just a new car. They drop A LOT by just driving them off the lot. This car has a 10 year plan, the car will be paid off in 4, so 6 years of no payments will allow me to get my money out of her. I should have waited a year or two, but I was impatient. Doesn't make the car any less fun, just a little more money out of my wallet.

Hah. Cars depreciate. Don't give a fuck. Drive it and enjoy it. Rice it, turbo it, track it. Whatever. It's a fucking awesome car and should be enjoyed.

Not really. The ACV (actual cash value) that insurance companies use for payouts aren't as dictated by market value as you'd expect. Plus you won't necessarily need gap coverage if you put a nice chunk of money as a down payment anyway. The initial depreciation hit is expected with any car, and the twins aren't magical unicorns that are immune to it.

Obviously everyone hopes that their car holds its value as well as possible regardless of what you drive, but you can't really concern yourself with the market value of the car too much one year into ownership unless you have intentions to get rid of it fairly quickly. And if that's the case, then you should've leased it. Besides, a lot of the cars that are marketed toward the enthusiasts but aren't out of the average American's reach that end up holding their value end up not doing so for a few years after its release, especially once the demand goes up from people who missed their opportunity to get one earlier. So it's a little too early to say that the twins are losing (not "loosing") value at a fast rate.

And even if it does in fact end up being the case... it's a ~$25k car produced in large enough quantities to be acquired if someone wants one without really having to fight over the car since it's not really limited in numbers. It's not quite the recipe for strong resale value.

I agree its still a worthy car but considering it was made to satisfy the enthusiast demographic and the overall price tag these cars are basically dime a dozen as of right now

Wait, new cars depreciate in value??

With the exception of a few very special cars (like the F40 or McLaren F1), almost every car for the past few decades has followed the same depreciation curve. Even for cars with supposedly "high resale value", there generally isn't that much variation.

I don't think they're really going to be worth much in 10 years either, just look at Miata prices. Maybe more like 50 years.

I think these cars are going to be like the integra gsr or prelude. They made a decent amount of the twins, but a lot of them are already pretty heavily modified, and that number is only going to increase. Sure, they won't go up in value, but stock, clean examples of these cars will still be desirable years from now imo.

There are a lot of enthusiasts waiting to buy a lightly used 86 for cheap, but I think that demand will help keep their resale relatively high, especially when compared to mustangs, camaros, genesis coupes, ect.

If you think this car is loosing value quickly, then you don't pay enough attention to other makes and models on the marketplace...

The difference is that the special cars above have transcended car status and are truly art. Art will hold it's value better than cars usually. Of course, there are a few random vehicles that have incredible resale values, though no one can pinpoint the reason. My FJ is one of them thankfully, but take a look at some of the Land Rover Defenders. They've actually gone up in value since production stopped. I'm hoping the same happens with my FJ since they're not being produced after this year.

I never understood how investment and car can be used in the same sentence when talking about new or slightly used vehicles.

Especially sports cars, if you buy new you have to consider that expense disposable income.

If you just need a CAR for commuting you should be looking at base modles, i.e. Yaris, Versa, etc. and used ones at that. So then consider 10k for a newish reliable vehicle and this car is around 25k. That 15k gap should be disposable for you since you are buying something you don't NEED.

But to each their own I guess since the average sale price of a car is like 30k? lol. Sometimes I wish I wasn't a car enthusiast so I could be happy DDing a Yaris for cheap.

haha, a few years before I bought this car I got wrecked and was close to totaled. I was browsing Yaris World forum a lot in the limbo period of insurance adjustment. I was like I'll just get a Yaris and DD it stock. O, TRD springs and sway bars? OK, just those mods. Oh a light set of wheels and nice tires too? Ok that's it. etc, lol

my favorite thread was the guy that got a salvaged hatch and made it into a snow plow

Exactly the plan. Next car will be a GTR, but the FRS will stay. I plan on tracking the hell out of it. If I do sell it, it'll be in 10 years or so.
