Hi Rob. That starter battery should work under most conditions if you are using it regularly. We regularly get -20 to -30C, i ran a slightly larger battery and mine worked flawlessly....it did fit with the 1.5dump but it wont fit the standard battery tray that Rob sends with the 1.5 dump.

@Bu-Tang used the small starter this winter, i will let him speak to his experience with starting in the cold.

Did you go with that starter battery? Or something stronger? I want to do the 1.5 dump pack and keep everything under the hood... but we have temps down to -15C here occasionally.
Yeah, I just ordered the one linked from the FR-S/BRZ developer's kit page. I think we get down to -15C at the very extreme during our winters here, but I plan on moving somewhere warmer before next winter.

Here is another picture of the conversion kit and how it all looks when grouped with the other dumps. Rob has created a very clean installation.

This winter was REALLY cold for this area. Normally we'd have nighttime temps no lower than -12C and daytime temps ranging from -10C to +5C, but it actually got down to -20C two or three nights with daytime temps in the -17C to -10C range... but that was only for several days/nights. Still, the average temps were probably 5-10C colder than any other winter since 1978.

I would be concerned that the small starter battery wouldn't work at -20C, but: (1) that's a very uncommon occurrence around here; and (2) I likely wouldn't be driving anyway.

Still, I think I'd prefer a larger battery just in case. Which larger battery did you use, what tray did you use to put it on and where did you get that tray?

Thanks!

Here's an idea. What if some where down the future it's possible to incorporate a hybrid type car brake regeneration design in which the battery can be charged also from braking to a red light or stop sign. Something like this would reduce the charge time for the battery. And since this car isn't electric all four wheels wouldn't need this system, you could go mini scale and have it on only one wheel or just the two front wheels. Just an idea.

I suppose I could just buy the regular one and then if it doesn't work out in the winter, buy a larger one just for winter use and put it in the trunk or something...

Honestly guys we argued this a long time ago. You don't need to swap out the starter battery. Its fine. Give it a shot and I know it will work. Im so confident in it that IF I were a little richer I would offer you your money back on the starter battery if it did not work out. I had it sit for 2.5 weeks and it fired up on the first try. Gary had it sit in cold weather multiple times and it worked, and I think Bu-tang is running a audio system on it.

Trust me its fine.

Being an RWD a simple system could be added to the rear driveshaft or pinion on the rear axle like they do for some rock crawlers like this:
