A flush, or transmission oil change?

A flush usually involves a machine hookup. A transmission oil change usually involves 2 hours of labor, minimum.

If you're asking for a flush at 1K, it's a colossal waste of money I agree. But more importantly, is your 2nd gear grind at all speeds and under all conditions, or only when the engine is cold?

My 2nd gear "grinds" on mornings and cold startups. It goes away after the transmission is warmed up. I learn to avoid grinding by changing my driving style.

No way a manual transmission takes that long, especially at the dealership when subarus are all they work on.

Longo Toyota/Scion/Lexus.

Yes, it should not take that long. I'm just overestimating based on my own transmission oil change experience.

Took me an hour start to finish.

sorry i just said flush because it's a M/T, but just an oil change. I've done a transmission fluid change on many different toyotas, I know what's involved. My tacoma is the biggest bitch of them all. I usually just remove the shifter assembly, sit down in the passenger seat of the car and pour on in. And still this is less than 2 hrs including jacking up the car and using manual tools in an alleyway with a flashlight.

As for the grind, it will grind only in second gear at any rpm, with or without a load on the motor for the first approx 20-30 mins of driving, then it seems to go away except for the occasional "clunk." The harder i drive it the better (maybe it's a sign). If I open the garage, it's 70 degrees + outside, i warm up the car for 5 mins, then drive slowly, no matter what i get a grind - especially when there isn't a load on the tranny, like a soft and slow shift at 2k rpms going under 20 mph.

Longo straight up tells me they could give a shit while im there, and i just got an email from the guy providing $400 quotes asking how my car is doing... lol I'm not terribly worried, the grind isn't horrible and ima swap fluids and see how it goes. The blowing hot air is kindof annoying tho

This type of thing is exactly the reason I now do everything I can on my own. I got suckered into a X mile checkup too that cost me $750. Looking back at it now that I know what I do, I got the following:

Oil change
Engine air filter
tire rotation
resurfaced rotors

At least the braking vibration I didn't know the cause of went away. In hindsight I am not that mad about it since it forced me to learn a lot, now I have a lot more knowledge of how my car works and how to maintain it. I have saved thousands doing my own work on my own car. I have replaced 6 brake calipers, 8 rotors, countless oil changes, tire changes, etc.

Plus building your tool chest and learning new service procedures is a lot of fun and though frustrating at times, very rewarding experience. When you rack up the miles and know the car is running flawlessly because of you is priceless.

My AC has the same problem of only blowing hot air when AC is not on. I thought maybe I did something wrong. But I am really surprised that this is a 'feature'. If the dealer cannot fix this kind of issue with 3 trial, can we invoke the lemon law then?

This 1,000 mile checkup is new to me ..... is that a Longo dealer thing ... ??

As you know, the "cricket noise" is a common occurrence with some of these cars and the only thing a dealer can do is swap out the fuel pump.

The "grinding in second gear" is another common complaint and the only thing a dealer could do is change the fluid (with the same stuff) which wouldn't help the situation.

The "blowing of warm air" is another common "feature" and there is nothing the dealer can do about it.

So, what to do.

Sometimes the crickets will quiet down by feeding them top tier premium gas. Sometimes not. You could try having the fuel pump (HPFP) swapped out.

I suggest you just give the transmission a chance to warm up and shift the cold transmission from 1st to 2nd by slowly and firmly pulling the lever into 2nd gear. You could try changing the transmission oil (just use the recommended spec).

As far as blowing of warm air ..... I suggest you punch the recirc button or open the window or turn on the A/C.

I hope you get your car (and/or yourself) settled down so you can enjoy driving it.....

The hell? I had massive grinding in 5th gear, and swapped my tranny fluid to see if it fixed the issue. When it didn't, I took it to that same dealer. They replaced my transmission, didn't even care that the fluid had been swapped.

Weird, maybe ask for another service advisor?

Well, qqzj ..... maybe the word "feature" was not the best word to use (sounds like a car salesman) .... inherent quirk would be better.

So, as I understand the situation, the "duct work" for part of the ventilation system is in the engine compartment where it gets quite warm. So the "fresh air" gets warmed up prior to arriving inside the cabin.

What to do:

* try to insulate the duct work from the engine bay heat

* punch the recirculation button to cut off part of the vent system

* turn on the A/C for a spell to cool down the ducts

* turn on the A/C and leave it on

* roll down the windows to get fresh air

So, that's my take......

the last three listed there seem to work for me. Recirc just limits the amount of warm air being delivered..

Was about to change my trans fluid at the dealership, and they said I don't need it. I ain't complaining, my car shifts fine as long as I let it warm up. $30k full service was still crazy expensive.

Any problems I have with the car I tell them right up front when I'm signing the car off for service, because when the service is done they usher me to the cashier and out as quickly as they can. They don't want to spend extra time addressing this issues after they've rolled the car out of the shop.
