I heel toe 3 - 2 just about everyday and it is perfectly smooth IMO.
What don't you like about it? |

I read that but I don't understand I guess. You say it is "awkward and hard to do smoothly". I don't really get what that means. Is it hard to find the gate? Does it grind? is it feel like the cold first gear and just doesn't want to go in?
Like I said I do 3 - 2 at high RPM almost daily and there is no issues (unless I mess up the revs and chirp the rear tires lol). Maybe it is your transmission have a problem? |

synchros are a mechanical solution that use friction to equalize the transmission shaft speeds. while their operation is designed to be automatic, in some conditions (particularly when the oil is cold), shifting into neutral and releasing the clutch before changing gear, can help the situation.

2nd gear until warmed up in this car is just awful. I have kartboy, all bushing, and new fluid and its still not perfect. Ive grinded gears before because its so bad and I wasnt paying attention. Once warmed up everything is normal.

I'm talking about just the physical movement from 3rd down into 2nd. I always drive carefully and cautiously until the car is warmed up.

You mean the travel of the shifter from 3-2 or getting the shifter into second gear?

Well in that case yes everything i've done has improved that greatly, forgot to mention i have mtech springs. Its now so notchy that i dont even have to think i just goes to the gear nearly on its own. MTEC springs are designed to center the shifter by stiffening up the springs. This is best for 2-3, 4-5 type shifts

IN that case I think it is just a matter of get used to, similar to the clutch. It is high yes but after learning you don't have problem.

I guess we have different attitudes about cars, but I bought the FRS b/c it had so much of the attributes that I wanted, but it wasn't perfect so I'm changing a few things up. I used to have a 240sx with an S15 spec-r engine/drivetrain 6speed. That transmission was pretty nice! Way better downshifting from 3rd to 2nd. The best transmission I've ever had though was in my 2006 STI. Man it was amazing. So honestly when people say "you just gotta get used to it" don't realize the potential for what's out there and how a few little tweaks go a long way. I also think that people who haven't had several different cars don't really know what they want in a car. It's funny how FRS people often seem to be such noobs with cars. (not saying you are but it seems like it's common, probably b/c it's a Scion.) The clutch for example. Did you know you can lower the clutch pedal? It's way better. |

Getting in a little late to this discussion, but I've found that the Kartboy short shifter helped quite a bit with the 3rd to 2nd downshift (after it was broken in, at first it was worse). The mtec springs helped a lot with 2nd to 3rd upshift and 5th to 4th downshifts, and motor mounts with transmission mount helped everything feel tighter all around.
