Do any short shifters improve the downshift to 2nd?

One thing I don't like about the transmission is the downshift to 2nd is pretty awkward, and it's hard to do smoothly and quickly. Wondering if a short shifter would improve that. Like kartboy or something. I know ofc that it would shorten the throw by x%, not not sure about that clunky awkwardness down to 2nd.

Not sure about a short shifter, but these are supposed to make a big improvement to the whole shift action:

I couldn't agree with you more. Down shifting into 2nd is not as easy as I would like it to be.

Yea it's not too bad, but (maybe you have) comparing to other transmissions in other cars, it's not quite as good, and room for improvement. My 2006 STI was way better in this regard. It's weird how you can't really downshift into 2nd in a smooth motion, b/c you have to shift to the left pretty far in neutral position to then go down to 2nd.

I assume you don't actually double clutch, that was necessary on older cars when transmission wasn't synchronized or whatever. Now you only have to do single clutch.

Thanks man! Definitely the type of thing I'm looking for...

What cars have you driven before? The 86 has the shortest throw g/box of any car I have driven. When you down shift to 2nd what is happening? Are you moving the stick to the wrong spot or are the synchros bulking and making it slower to shift into?

It's like I described. It seems like the move over to the left to get into 2nd from neutral is far, so that when going down from 3rd I gotta make it 2 conscious movements down to neutral and then into 2nd. It's like 2nd gear is too far to the left.

I would say that is just something you will get used to. But if it erks you a short shifter will fix that. Everyone has their own preferences with that sort of thing. Personally I would prefer a shorter clutch throw than the shorter shift.

I've driven for 7,000miles, so ya know I kinda know what I want to change now. A short shifter and those springs mentioned above sounds like a great combo.

FYI you can adjust the clutch pedal down. It's really easy once you get used to being upside down under the steering wheel. Just gotta make sure to test it out so that you didn't adjust too low.

I noticed when I installed my weighted shift knob, shifting to the corner gears seemed to be a bit smoother.

So you're saying he was double clutching, not granny shifting like he should?

It doesn't matter if you win by an inch or a mile, winning's winning.

Unless I am rolling to a stop, I always double-clutch down. Is it necessary in a modern syncro'd transmission? I'd say yes.

Yea, but we're simply talking here about the DOWNSHIFT INTO 2nd GEAR FROM 3RD GEAR. Since it's been in while that you've driven a manual, you prob don't have many cars to compare it to.
