Not sure if Pure Price applied to new 2013 models (I bought my 10 series on the last day of 2013), but I got a little over $2000 off MSRP.
The dealership said something about selling my 10 series at a loss to me because it was sitting on the lot for 6+ months and they wanted to get rid of it (not that I believe it anyway...)

There was a great story on NPR a while back where a dealership needed to sell 30 cars to get a $60K bonus payment, and on the last day of the month they still needed to sell five cars. The salesmen were begging people to buy those cars, and they were willing to take a loss on the individual vehicles to get that $60K payment. Of course, if they have already hit their target, they're not as likely to deal. But it's good information to have. |

This is what I did. My 2013 was 20,151.19. It was 2000 cheaper, but I also haggled in their top package of 7 years / 100,000 mile blah blah everything paid service (because it made my wife feel better) and the "anti-theft package" since it saved me $50/mo on insurance to have proof I had it. ![]() Quote:
To address things like this I was firm. I told them to remove the nitrogen and put in air. I wasn't going to pay for what they already had in the tires without my requesting it. I did this with everything on the vehicle and the only thing they actually removed was the "Map" chip that allows my stereo to have Nav. But my phone does that shit, so I was fine with saving the $1600 they were trying to charge me. When I finally left the dealer, I had a full tank of premium, new tires & full of nitrogen, and a 2013 Asphalt Fr-S. I thought I did ok for myself. My trade off was a 4.45% interest on a 6 year loan. I might have gotten lower interest, but felt like 3.5 hours was enough time haggling. |

Yeah, I like the front bumper on the FRS, but the BRZ prices out so much better... You can get a BRZ LMT below invoice, but I don't see many Scion dealers going below the "pure price" msrp (at least on the 2014 models).

Don't ever pay pure price, it's a rip off. Just tell the dealer to fuck off and walk away. You can make a deal if a dealer actually wants to sell a car. With Scion sales as horrible as they are, they have zero leverage to enforce it. Toyota even gave dealers the green light to stop supporting Scion as a separate and distinct brand last year.
Bottom line, don't be a sucker. Someone wants to sell you a car the right way, you just have to find them. As for the Nitrogen, tell them to take it out and put in air and watch them throw it in for 'free' just like LoJack or whatever BS they try to pull. Now if you live in the middle of nowhere and there's only one stealership you might be screwed unless you're willing to drive or ship a car. |

So I happen to come across the local Toyota general manager at my work today. I told him I was interested in a buying a Scion FR-S and jokingly said, "I'd get one if you give me a deal on it." And he said, "Scion has PurePrice so there are no deals." And then I said, "Well, I'd at least have to thoroughly test drive it first to make sure it's worth it for me." And he said, "We don't let anyone test drive the FR-S by themselves because it's a sports car. We only allow limited test drives with our sales people."
So basically, there's no way in hell I'm going to buy from them. This is why I hate dealerships. I refuse to give my money to people like that. It's not even about the discounts... if they were willing to respect me, trust me, and get me what I want, I'd feel alright about paying a little extra. I used to work for a Mitsubishi dealership and was in charge of the Evo's. So I'm pretty sure I'm not going to hurt your $25,000, slow-ass, mass production "sports car." And what's ironic is that I've actually seen their own freaking sales people spin the tires and hit the rev limiter and ding the doors and let it idle for a very long time in these brand new cars! So... it's ok for their sales people to abuse it but it's not ok for a potential customer to drive it around for an extra hour or so? Ugh... f'ing retarded man. ![]() This seriously makes me consider just going with a Subaru BRZ. I've had much better luck with the Subaru dealers and could save a lot of money.

I was at a Scion dealership in central Virginia today working numbers on an FR-S that I want to buy. The guy started at MSRP and added about $800 delivery, $500 fees, and $1000 tax. He wouldn't budge because "Scion is not allowed to sell new cars with a starting price below MSRP".
We did not make a deal today. It's nice to hear that Subaru will at least work with you on the price, but they seem to already start a couple thousand higher than Scions. I'd like to make it out the door for $25k or less for a base model. |

If you paid MSRP minus $1700, then they basically gave you nothing for your trade because they likely had around $2000 mark up on the front side. If that's the case, then they just gave up most of their markup in order to acquire your trade for free. A dealer could show you only $500 on the trade in, but then mark MSRP down $2000 and you'd have gotten a better deal... IF you can find a Scion dealer willing to come off PurePrice. This is why BRZs sell for around or below the price of an FRS. This is why it's always better (financially) to sell your car than trade it in. It is, of course, less convenient. It's also why car salesmen make more money (at least on the front side) selling used cars. At the dealership I worked at, a $27000 used car would have $4000-$5000 markup, but a $27000 new car had around $2000 markup. Thus, if you were trading a car worth $500 wholesale (which is what they always do with a $500 car - wholesale it) on a used car, they could show the trader $2,500 for their trade and still make $2000-$3000 profit. If they showed the trader $2,500 for their $500 trade on a new car purchase there would be very little front side profit in the deal. Basically, if I sold a used car, I could show the trader a lot more money and still make 25% of a significant amount of profit margin. I sold a number of new cars and made only $50 on the front side (the manufacturer would give each salesman $50-$500 on the back side for a new car sale). |
