I think I heard something like what you are describing but it sounded pretty even, I'll have to listen to mine closely next time I drive it. It doesn't seem like it's having a problem as it comes up through the rpms in that range. One thing with the exhaust I was thinking of is it moving just right in that rpm range as I had that problem with my impreza at one point.

Sounds like a UEL exhaust system. But I do hear something, sounds like a cylinder is missing slightly. Could be bad spark plug, coil, injector, or cylinder leakage (blown DI seal, poor compression due to leaking rings or valves) all spring to mind. That's just seat of the pants guestimation. You can rule out most of that by doing a compression test, and checking the plugs and coils.....good luck. Also one more thing it also sounds like the cam belt skipped a tooth - I know it's chain driven but that could mean that the AVCS could be acting up and possibly phasing the cams improperly at low RPMs and when you get to high RPMs they engine responds better?

That's my call on that, too. Cylinder dropping out. Got that noise out of my old altima. Trick is, what's causing the misfire? In the altima, it was weak/no spark, I pulled the plug boots to do a little clean up and ultimately ended up severing the wire inside the boot. Very expensive way to find a $10 problem. Didn't throw a cel, though it should have.
I also had similar issues in other old GM V6's with coil packs going bad. Got worse when under load. Need 4 things for combustion fuel, air, compression and spark. The tech needs to find out which one (or more) of those components is missing. |

If you have the EcuTek ProECU you can check via the logging to see if it is misfiring or not. (see attached screen)
Otherwise the next step would be to hook it up to a scanner and see if it is misfiring or running rich. Misfiring is usually caused by an overly rich condition, or a bad ignition component. If knock caused the misfire you'd hear a sound similar to pool balls hitting eachother just prior to the misfire. |

Hey Guys,
Gave the car to dealership and got told issue is fixed. My question was what did you do? Apparently a ecu update and pulling and cleaning the injectors sorted it. Well bull, it's not as bad sound wise, but same if not worse performance wise. I feel like I'm driving a stock last gen civic type R. No power torque anything under 5k and then whoopy a Fkn normal car. Argh! I don't know what to do. No CEL no buneos!

Have you owned a Subaru before? This is how the factory tune sounds. Unfortunately with Subaru the best thing you can do is have a little tuning done by someone experienced with subarus. They have a rep for not honoring warranty anyay.

last video at 22 seconds you can hear a pop, not sure it is from outside or you bumping the phone but sounded like the DI seal failure pop when you give the car throttle. I could not tell the difference for awhile and in that range of RPM anyways the car has very little torque. That is where the torque dip lies.

Hi All,
Sorry it's been a while. I have owner a Forester from brand new to over 110,000km trust me I know full well about torque dip and boxer motors. Anyways finally got AFM technical team involved and after several days the have confirmed direct injection issue. I've told them to also check spark plugs considering the related issues. I'll post back once I get the car and see if I can ask for original parts with some photos for you guys. Interesting to know I don't have a CEL and the issue doesn't seem to be like anyone else with DI issue. Cheers, Sam
