Sounds like as much as a pain in the ass as it was on my Celica.
One side was easy but the other side a nightmare.

And if you bend that clip, makes it even harder!

UPDATE: Figured it out for anyone thinking of changing bulbs. There are two small retention clips on either side of the bulb. Just push these forward and up toward the bulb and this will allow you to pull the bulb plug assembly outward towards the engine bay. Remove bulb and replace with desired bulb. Reverse steps to reinsert. Done

There's a bit of a learning curve when re-attaching the retention clips. Took me 20 minutes to figure it out, second one took me a minute or so once I got my head around it. Take your time to examine the clips before removal and re-attaching, refer to other HID if you need too. Also pay attention to bulb installation as there are two small notches on the bulb plug, one is rectangular and the other is half moon shaped. Make sure that the rectangular opening is too the top of the bulb plug as it fits over a metal or plastic tab when reinserting plug

Yeah I shake my head at some of the design flaws of headlights bulbs and other bulbs on most Japanese cars. If it's not a nightmare to access, it's a nightmare to remove and replace, but usually it ends up being both!

Question

Sorry to dig this thread up from the grave everyone but I was trying to replace my bulbs today and I have absolutely no luck on the removal part. I know JPXM0Dz written a whole paragraph on it but I am still stuck... May I get more pointers?

This is the bulb socket right? I've been pushing the clips in the purple circles but I think I need to push the "P" clips circled in red? If it is, I am gonna feel so damn stupid

You need to push the red "P"s. If you look closely, you can see the groove that they sit in to slide out.

Thanks! I also found a guide on the whole process in detailed pictures.
