They should give you a rental if they keep it overnight for warranty work. The biggest thing you have to fear is if they are a lazy dealership and feed you a 'don't worry about it' line. Check all your fluids, oil, brakes, transmission, if they're above the minimum mark you may have just had a fluke.

Coolant level fluctuates, if it's at half I wouldn't guess that was the issue, you need quite a bit of fluid to get visible smoke for more than a few minutes. Only you know how much wiper fluid you've used. I'm really rather baffled by this. Hope it works out.


Edit: Since you didn't check the fluids yourself to begin with I'd wager that's something you're not happy to go do, give the dealership a shot at diagnosing before you take matters into your own hands.

Thanks, I have actually only used the wiper fluid once. I feel like the dealership I bought my car from didn't prep the car properly before giving it to me. One more thing, do you know if I would need to pay for the rental car or would it be covered under the warranty? I want to be semi-prepare when going to the dealership tomorrow.

Well, HD86 ..... that would depend on where it is leaking. If it's a head gasket, it could take a couple of weeks.....if it's a lose hose clamp, a couple of turns with a screwdriver might fix it.

Back in the day, we used to put dry oatmeal in the radiator to "fix" minor leaks, till we could get a new hose.

Yep, the oatmeal would swell up and plug up small leaks.

If they're a good dealer they should probably supply you with a free loaner car while they're working on yours. My area Subaru dealer offered me a loaner for the day when I brought my car in for a fluids change.

At the very least they should give you a shuttle home if you live near the dealer. The VW dealer I took my GTI to in Denver gave me a lift to and from home and that car wasn't even in warranty...

Here is an update, I have been at the dealership for around 2 hours and they just found out it is an oil leak and now they are trying to find out where the leak is coming from. I have to say, I am a tad disappointed with my very first toyota considering I bought it brand new.

It actually turned out to be something (I forgot which part it was) was crushing the washer in the oil passage tube, which cause an oil leak onto the exhaust which causes the smoke and burning smell. They said that they have to order parts to fix it and it would take like 2 weeks for the parts to be here. In the mean time, they patched it up a little to decrease the amount of oil that is leaking.

What a stroke of bad luck, but if it makes you feel any better. A couple took their Toyota 86's to the track and something happen to one of them, they ended up towing one back to the dealership. A couple of weeks later i saw them at the track again so it ended well.

If you ever get bad service at one dealership, take it to another.

I drive for 1.5 hours to a dealer in another city to service mine.

BRZ warranty is the same as FRS, minus the free service.

To me the extended warranty wasn't worth the added expense, as I plan to boost my car which will void the drivetrain warranty. Also figured I'd spend that money on upgrades instead. Funny thing is at the dealership they were offering a 7/70k extended warranty for ~$1,600, which I declined, but then a couple months after ownership Subaru sent me a 7/70k extended warranty offer for ~$800, but I believe the deductible was a little higher. FYI, my May 2013 BRZ Limited has been completely problem free, except for HPFP chirping.

An extended warranty is up to you. Thread discussing if it's worth it.
