Smoke Coming From Hood When Driving

I just bought my 2014 Scion FRS around 2 weeks ago and I have been occasionally getting white smoke coming from the hood when driving. It also gives off a sort of burning/smokey smell. At first I just thought it was the engine breaking in, but I drove on a 200 miles trip today and halfway through my trip, I had to pull over because the car was giving off too much smoke and I didn't want to damage the engine. Is this normal? or is there something wrong with the car? I have bought multiple new cars and this is the first time that I have ever had an issue when purchasing a new vehicle.

Take it in to the dealership, definitely not normal.

Best case scenario is that there was extra coating applied during shipping that wasn't removed during inspection before you took posession, worst case is something is leaking, could be coolant could be oil, could be wiper fluid. Watch the temperature gauge if it starts to overheat pull over and let it cool down.

Not normal at all.

Look in your engine bay, if you see white spots over your hoses or belt it indicates a coolant leak.

Check your fluids and make sure they aren't significantly low.

Thanks for the replies, I will take this to the dealership on Monday. Also, this is the first time I have ever bought a toyota, will these stuff be covered by the toyotacare that came with the car?

This should be a warranty issue. Toyotacare appears to be a maintenance plan, oil changes, filter changes etc.

Your warranty covers all problems for 3 years or 36,000 miles. You also have a 5 year or 60,000 mile power-train warranty. This problem won't cost you, get it in asap.

Yep, as suggested....a trip to the dealer would be in order.

Does the "smoke" smell like oil or anti-freeze .. ??

Are their any puddles of fluid under your car .. ??

You might check and make sure the radiator overflow container isn't overfilled.

the cam plate has been known to leak oil onto the over pipe.

If it's giving off so much smoke that you can't see and have to pull over then you may not want to drive it to the dealer... maybe give them a call and see if they can send someone to you or have the car flat-bedded? White smoke pouring out of your hood to the point where you have to pull over doesn't sound like a minor problem to me...

pop the hood and see what you see and report back.

I know for most of us during the first 500 miles you can get a burning smell which is normal but NOT visible smoke!

Burning the clutch...?

It not enough smoke to where I can't see, it is just enough smoke to where I can see it and the cars around my can see it when I am driving.

I also just looked under the hood and the coolant seems to be half full and it was over the FULL line just 5 days ago, so I think the coolant might be leaking. Also the windshield wiper fluid is empty, :sigh:. One last thing, do you guys know if fixing a coolant leak would take a long time? as in requiring my car to stay at the dealer ship overnight, since I kind of need the car to get back home.
