On my third pump. Crickets are back, but heavily muffled. Its not nearly as bad as it was. Still unacceptable.

No. There's a reason they say premium. Think of it as running a tune for 91, but you use 87. Our cars are "tuned" for premium from the factory. Have some annoying, harmless sounds with 10% ethanol rather than having annoying, harmful sounds from anything less than premium.

Anybody getting any chirps in the cold winter in Canada? I'm close to 9800 km (6100 miles) and I've never had chirping, but I've always used Esso 91 (or Exxon for you USA people) which is supposedly ethanol free here where I live.
I want to try 94 octane though to see how the car feels but the 94 octane has 10% ethanol and I don't want to risk getting the crickets just to see how 94 octane feels. |

Are toyobaru even aware ofthe fact that ethanol is cause??
We all believe it is the ethanol that causes cricket which I also believe so, but it seems manufacturers think differently. Reason for me to say that is because if they think ethanol is the reason, they should come up with a lot better solution. Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk |

I work for a Toyota service department as a Service Writer.
According to my Toyota FTS engineer and District Service/Parts Manager, yes they are aware that ethanol makes it worse. I do about 30,000+ miles a year in my car as a daily. I'm on my fifth fuel pump as the changes have been made - the first from the factory, a replacement at 10k with the same OE part. Pump 3 was the countermeasured part with the same part number (rev.A). When that one made noise, my FTS rep had me replace it with another so the revised part could be sent back to be torn apart and inspected. I've had the 3rd revision fuel pump in my car for about 3400 miles so far and had no noise come back, and I've been asked to use a different filling station and brand of fuel at every fillup. I was getting approx 2500 miles before having a chirp return on the other pumps. So far so good for me, at least. Last edited by fledonfoot; 12-24-2013 at 01:38 PM. Reason: Can't spell. |

The third revision fuel pump is the "insulated" one.
These have been trickling out to dealers very slowly since the revised TSB in late october. I know for a fact the parts hit the Manual Allocation list for a while in early November and Toyota were only shipping a handful a day with DSPM/FTS approval, and some dealerships were just installing the old Rev.A part in place of the new pump as it was taking 2-4 weeks to get the new pump in. There is the possibility that if the dealer told you in November that they installed the newer pump and you got it in less than 2-3 days from the TSB update going live, you might actually have the older part if you have an unscrupulous service dept that plays with part number supersessions. I personally watched the backorder numbers climb every day on Dealer Daily's parts warehouse inventory until they started shipping- mine left the Baltimore warehouse for me on 11/21. I think anyone that was told that they had the new pump installed in the CAT or NY regions in early November might want to double check part numbers. There is also, obviously, the possibility that the new pump can also make noise, too. Which is why I'm mixing up my fuel as much as I can. |

Shell premium fuel would occasionally cause it, but I couldn't develop a pattern like I could with the other three. Also, I'd be interested to see how the tech externally insulated the fuel pump, given the relatively tight confines of the fuel lines, cover, etc. |
