That call can only be made by the person driving the car. I live on a very steep hill that isn't always plowed well. That is why I chose the tires I did. I also work nights and the roads aren't always cleared.

For me, it's quicker and less of a hassle doing it myself than bringing rims and tires to/from a shop twice a year. Also, in the long run it's cheaper to buy the tools.

I swapped mine on today.

I had my first drive with them today going from Salem to Nashua (NH). Almost ended up in the other lane a half dozen times while coasting down hill, not even touching the gas or brakes...
They were some generic brand winter tire that came with the wheels on Craigslist. The hunt for Blizzaks or equivalent starts tomorrow!

I won't be changing to any Winter tires. If the weather is that bad the car will remain in the garage and I will take the 4x4 with it's all weather tires

Bought a set of Conti EWCs on 16" steelies. Should be here on Monday. That said, I'm driving down to NJ for Thanksgiving, so I hope the weather holds until I get back.

...which was perfect timing as a few hours later we got some light snow that I drove in.

You got what you paid for. Nothing comes cheap, if you need quality. Problem is that many suppliers ran out of stock of good winter tires by now.

Well, I put a brand new set of Blizzak WS70s on my outback today - I'm ready for the ski season now...

Agreed, I still came out ahead since I got 16" wheels with TPMS for $200. I was hoping the tires would last me at least 1 winter, and pony up for nice tires next year, but after Saturday that is no longer an option, the safety of my family trumps the money.

I am lucky, I am going to Townfair Tire Wednesday and they have Blizzak WS-70s for the 16" rims at a 205 width in stock.
I had these as 245s on my 2001 Camaro SS, you lose some/a lot sportiness but the weather stopping and turning ability second to none.

I will say that the little snow that we got in Manchester quickly turned to ice and no winter tire will prevent you from slipping on ice.
