Then had horrible numbers each successive year. Toyota does not want the same to happen on the FR-S and dealers would only get 1 or 2 a month, some none (I've posted this before). I'm trying to wrap my head around that logic. Can anyone synthesize?
The strategy of only producing 1200 cars a year to keep demand high makes no sense. They are going to sell a relatively fixed number of cars over its life so it would make a lot more sense to just sell them up front and re-tool the plant to build something else rather than crank out that few cars every year. Subaru is not in the business of producing cars in such low volumes....They will never sell enough cars to ever come close to recouping their development costs.

In a month from now we will all be laughing about valentine's day when everyone was all worried that only 1200 cars would be produced.

Hell it would take 2 years for everyone on the forum to get a car and that just isn't going to happen.

All right guys! Guff here with some info!! Zaku and I had a short conversation about this and we decided to post this on here... I have been talking with a few local dealers, and things are looking interesting....

Here's the Subaru of Plano email:

"Hi,

I am now being told in the near future we will have a BRZ (maybe 2) to show to the public. I am not sure when a test drive will be available, but at least the car can be viewed in person. I am sure we will be in line with the other dealership in terms of handling a deposit. However, I prefer to eliminate any reason to say "no" once the car arrives. Would you like to know when the display model gets here?

Thanks,"

The way he ended it, he seemed to know when the Display was coming, and I believe Tbxgz said in the "Real Life Spottings" thread, that the dealer might get one next week.

So I will conclude with, ONLY 2 per dealer, and display models soon!

And thanks for posting Guff.

Hey guys... "we'll only get 2 cars per month" sounds very familiar. This exact phrase was recited to me the month the tC launched in '04. That shortage lasted a few months.

I called up a few dealers and they don't have any info of this nature. Until EVERY dealer states the same facts, I'll take this as sales talk/hype BS.

EDIT: Guff's post makes sense.

I spoke to a few members here and agreed that Tomorrow I'll actually call and talk to the person I know there at HQ, who had been very knowledgeable. Maybe we can shed some light on this, and well if more dealers start to say the same thing. Then that's enough grounds to start asking via social networks and different places for a good explanation. No price and a limit on what to sell already? something is fishy.

They're not running a charity. If people are so desperate to have some consumer item on day 1, now, now, now, with no price and no open order book with specs laid out... well they better expect to pay the price (literally) for their over exuberant wants.

Yes back-handed dealings are dodgy and nasty and play to the greasy car salesmen stereotype; however, if people could look past their longing after these bits of metal, plastic, and rubber, being disappointed or feeling wronged by a dealer shouldn't happen.

I am more interested in this new car than any new car in quite sometime, everything about it seems just about spot on... but eff me if I am going to jump through hoops and pay over the odds for a car that will still be available new (and maybe with more power and other options) for the next number of years.

The right price tag for an affordable rwd fun coupe is a big part of the equation. Screw it up and the demand is gone. If dealers jack up the price they risk getting a crapload of testdrives on their cars w/o a sale, each testdrive ruining the car further.

Well that's different from two cars for the year SoA told me before that the dealers would be getting cars for customers to see, sit in and they would eventually be used for "ride and drive" style events.

I never said they were. The dealer is still making around $1,500 on $500 over invoice. That's not a charity.

The point is the dealer is trying a bait and switch tactic. They are greedy assholes, there really isn't much way around that. It also gives people a bad opinion of dealers in general even the GOOD ones.

Making a promise and then breaking it is wrong in general. I think most people with reasonable morals would agree with that. If that dealer was up front instead of lying we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Exactly. Just further carries on the perception that car dealerships are greedy and will nickel and dime you for all you have.

^ Exactly. Maybe someone from the SoCal group buy should turn the tables on that asshole and call SOA corporate and explain what went down, and that Subaru dealer is being flamed on one of the biggest US BRZ/FRS forums on the net. Then Franky boy can go home and try to explain to his wife why he got $h:t canned.

I haven't looked at that BRZ Cal group-buy thread for quite a while before today, so if that is what happened, fair enough and the individual sales person involved does deserve the scorn.

That said, this is all anecdotally via some internet forum thread, where the OP of that thread may have helped raise expectations beyond anything that could reasonably been expected to occur from the group buy.

It is just a car, everyone can still get one eventually and I hope everyone finds a reliable and professional dealer to work with :-)

Let's say 25 buyers at $300 above invoice (which goes to him) that's 7.5k from profit (which isn't terrible) plus whatever else the company decides to give him.
I understand that $7500 isn't bad but for selling 25 cars it's not great. And if he can sell 2 at $2000 over MSRP then that's going to be quite a bit over invoice.

Even though most of us here wouldn't pay over MSRP I bet you there's some original AE86'ers that wouldn't even blink an eye after having to pay more. So even if they have to sell 5 or 6 before they start pushing them out at MSRP or lower, they will have definitely made much more than the original $7500 they were looking at making off the 25.

At any rate I don't believe it for a second when they say Invoice is what their cost is for the car. :P
