New strange noise?
I haven't read about this noise I started hearing in my car today anywhere else on the forums so if there's already a thread about this, I'm sorry.
Basically it sounds like wind going through a small hole or something really fast, and it sounds like it's coming from the passenger rear quarter panel or possibly the right side of the exhaust. I got winter tires put on yesterday and drove around but I don't remember hearing this noise, which only showed up this morning. I did try to plasti dip my wheels yesterday so I did all the masking (taped garbage bags to brakes with painters tape but that was a bust so I unmasked the car completely, and at first I thought I might have left a piece of tape there that could be moving in the wind at speeds but the strange thing as that the sound is only there when I'm in gear and accelerating. Coasting even at highway speeds gets rid of that sound completely, like the way it used to be, and revving the car even to redline while in neutral doesn't make that noise. I will try to see if I can record that sound somehow, or try to find a video of a similar sound if I find one. But it almost sounds like a supercharger whine, but not as high pitched and kind of how a piece of paper sounds when it's laying flat on a table and you blow air onto it's edge to make it lift up off the table a little bit. It's really hard to describe but it's VERY noticeable so it's hard to ignore. |

Masking with garbage bags ...... re-check all up underneith for one that might have a escaped and is hiding. When the tires were changed, was anything else done to the car? ..... any fluids changed .. ?? humfrz |

Nothing else was done to the car. It can't be the tires or some piece of garbage bag left behind because I would expect the noise to be continuous if that was the case. The noise lasts as long as I have my foot on the gas while also being in gear no matter if I'm applying 10% throttle or 100%, the noise is still there. It goes away AS SOON AS I let off the gas, and it's not there at all if I put my foot down on the gas in neutral. |

What you are describing is either tire noise or differential whine.

However, it could just be coincidental. If the latter is the case, I would go with what Ozzman is suspecting (the differential). You might check to make sure the differential fluid is up to the full mark. Maybe even change it (probably wouldn't hurt anyway). While your under there, you might check the fluid level in the transmission (if it's a MT). Keep us posted. humfrz |

In some fucked up sort of way that only quantum physicist might understand, the new tires may be inducing a harmonic through the diff that gets amplified by the driveshaft. Tire wear may help alleviate the noise, or a different weight gear oil could help, maybe even the 75w140 stuff.
For example we had a customer come in with a Honda Pilot to get new tires, Goodyear Integrity's. They returned a few days later complaining of a noise from the front of the vehicle around 45 mph, we thought it was a wheel bearing making the noise but couldn't be sure. I think we ended up replacing a LF wheel bearing and the LF axle to try and fix it. Noise was still there, and it ended up that the differential in the transmission was making the noise and telegraphing it down the axle to the Lf hub. We sent them to the Honda dealer as the transmission was still under warranty and the Honda dealer said it was the tires, so they replaced the brand new tires we put on and nope noise was still there, then they sold em a new axle, nope. After that they replaced the transmission to fix the noise. The basic gist is weird shit happens with noises and tires occasionally in that they may be acting as a harmonic damper or vice versa. |

One more stab, with the philosophy, "for every problem, there is a simple solution .... and it's usually wrong". If the new tires are "directional" or have a "this side out" side, were they put on correctly? I hope you get the situation resolved soon. Keep us posted. humfrz |

I've also noticed a blow-off valve type noise coming from the engine bay. My buddy said it sounds like an air leak somewhere and I agree. Not sure where exactly or if there even is an air leak for sure. It may have always sounded like this (I do have a TRD intake if that helps in any way), and now I'm just connecting dots that aren't meant to be connected, but I'm not sure.

if you have never had winter tires they make such odd road noise under acceleration at speed its hard to describe. sounds like higher pitched bearing or mechanical noise.

It's definitely not the tires. I've driven cars with winter tires before and never heard this noise and it's definitely not high pitched either
